Rejoice Molonglo voters struggling to decide who to put last on the come October 20. The SMH has a piece on Philip Pocock who wants to outlaw homosexuality and (more alarmingly for the rest of the population) sex outside of marriage.

Best of all he has a ranty bedroom YouTube vid from 2009 to outline his thoughts at tedious length (Thankyou A. Hadley for pointing that out).

UPDATE 23/09/12 13:53: And of course Phil is on Twitter, and feeling hard done by at the hands of all the deviants:

It annoys me that there are so many people who respect those with extreme views fo no other reason than they have the “courage” to express them.

Now there’s a profound truth about public discourse in these modern times of ours.

Loonies and deranged nutbags of all varieties (hey ACL, I’m staring at you) will demand respect because their malevolent drivel is based on religion, and because they based their views on religion it is therefore deserving of respect, which is a circular argument if ever I’ve seen on.

Similarly, tossers like this bloke claim that their views are credible simply because they’ve had the courage to express them in opposition to popular current opinion. I agree that it takes balls to sound off in public about one’s crazed beliefs, but that doesn’t make those beliefs any less ridiculous, obnoxious or offensive.

The deliciously named Mr Pocock should simply pack up, go home, and leave the grown ups to get on with things.

Its part of the same group that think saying “its political correctness gone mad” substitutes for an actual thought out argument supporting any position. “Im not allowed to slag people off? Its political correctness gone mad” but the opposite is if someone else gets to do something “they” are taking over the country.

2008 was Eddie Sarkis (Independent) for Ginninderra – 92…..

But overall

Robert Fearn – 2004 – Non Party C – Molonglo – 30

I think he might get a bit of a troll vote. It’s like a donkey vote, but thinks it’s clever.

I have the utmost respect for the surname Pocock particularly if David precedes it.Of course it would have nothing to do with the fact that he is 105 kg and built like a brick shithouse.

Sad, isn’t it, that in ridiculing this anachronistic would-be demagogue, critics resort to words, phrases and vehemence level that one normally associates with “poofta bashers”? Cory Bernardi suffered a similar onslaught from people who could not resist the opportunity to out-do him in silliness. At least Pocock and Bernardi have had the courage to stand up under their real names, using clear images of themselves and are not hiding behind the anonymity afforded by the internet to the cowardly.

It annoys me that there are so many people who respect those with extreme views fo no other reason than they have the “courage” to express them. Insulting and demeaning people who have done nothing wrong and whom affect your own life in no material way is far from courageous.

David Pocock’s views on gay rights (and marriage) are far removed from those of Philip Pocock. Interestingly, he states that his Christian beliefs are behind his support of gay marriage in this article, which is so different in approach from that taken by his namesake:
http://www.abc.net.au/religion/articles/2011/12/02/3382170.htm

So refreshing to read, as are the comments by Archbishop Tutu that he quotes.

“The notion that a woman has the right to refuse to have sex with her husband on a whim is really a development of feminism in the 21st century…”

I might get this bloke to have a word with my missus . . . she’s always knocking me back on a whim.

I’m pretty confident those opposing sex out of wedlock, government control of sex in wedlock, and criminalising homosexuality are a vanishingly small minority.

ahh, in public mebbe, jb – in the privacy of the polling booth, however…

No human or group of humans has ever known the truth, we are imperfect finite beings confronted with a vastness beyond our reckoning. Neither the minority nor the majority know the truth, even the clearest tome of knowledge, written perfectly by god, could not hold the infinite nature of reality.

I don’t trust anyone who claims to understand the infinite, religious or atheist, it is a physical impossibility and the height of self aggrandisement to impose your own world view upon the universe. In some thousands of years of religion, and a few hundred years of science, we have barely scratched the surface of time space, let alone everything else.

That any individual or group or book should claim the authority of god’s surety, without the capacity to hold such knowledge, why it is almost blasphemy.

Let he who has knowledge of sex give advice on it, that we may learn of our capabilities and weaknesses. Let he who has only knowledge of being a celibate bigoted old man keep his council within his realm, lest we all suffer the same fate.

If I want his advice on my sex life, I’d sleep with the old coot. While he is still outside my bed physically, I’d appreciate it if he stopped trying to “morally” barge in where he’s not welcome.

As I said previously I know this guy, he has lived alone at Northbourne flats for the last 14 years or so, he has no wife or children, lives across from one of the Northbourne windscreen cleaners & an aboriginal ” party” flat. He rides a pushbike, wears a black coat & used to drive taxis & somehow managed to con his way into Govt medico/legal employment.I feel that because he doesn’t have any real life of his own he is seeking some sort meaning to it all by manipulating other people under the disguise of moralistic religion mantra. He is a control freak with nothing to control unless we let him….. ie, just a freak, please don’t vote for him!!

It’s very interesting to read the responses to this homophobic bigot and contrast it to the reaction to Harvey Milk just 40 years ago. We’ve come a long way babes.

johnboy said :

They seem to be straight out of the 50s – especially in regard to married women staying out of the workforce.

According to his own views on sexuality, if he’s not married he doesn’t have sex in any way shape or form. That in itself would make him pretty cranky at anyone who actually does.

p996911turbo9:06 pm 24 Sep 12

Oh god I love The RiotACT. It is only here that a someone would bring up Kierkegaard when talking about a nutbag election candidate.

johnboy said :

I’m not questioning his right to his opinions.

Exactly.

He has a right to express his bigoted, anachronistic views.

And we in turn have a right to say he’s nuts (in case his own words didn’t already make that point enough)

Try to see the bright side of this – politicians and big governments are becoming redundant as society and technology move forward. Candidates like Pocock simply hasten that process.

I hope some clever geek is working on a software program to replace politicians as we speak.

c_c said :

His views on marriage are warped, does anyone know if he is married or has a family?

Oh jezuz – please – no!

I am also a psychologist and I cannot even begin to imagine how a man with these express views could do anything but damage to vulnerable people struggling with sex and relationship issues in his work as a clinician. Good on the APS for making its position clear in its media release today.

johnboy said :

Possibly a minority of one.

As funny as this all is, one has to remember that he is entitled to his own opinion no matter what it is. This is a cornerstone of a civilised society where all people are considered equal on all fronts.

Oddly enough, something written by Kierkegaard came to memory and I believe that it adds an interesting angle on the right to free speech:

“Truth always rests with the minority, and the minority is always stronger than the majority, because the minority is generally formed by those who really have an opinion, while the strength of a majority is illusory, formed by the gangs who have no opinion — and who, therefore, in the next instant (when it is evident that the minority is the stronger) assume its opinion… while truth again reverts to a new minority.”

Now you can read this and go whoa, are you kidding? But think about it, whilst controvertial and it has raised discussion, I would like you to think about something else that he said:

“As soon as it has come to the point that the crowd is to judge what is truth, it will not be long before decisions are made with fists.”

JB’s comment about a lonely old man got me thinking and whilst this guy has made some questionable comments at best, he is still an old man who doing what he thinks is right even though it is not very progressive or beneficial for the community.

enough seriousness, back to trolling.

I’m not questioning his right to his opinions.

I just think they’re awful

johnboy said :

If he’s the leader of a band his publicised views, apart from actively promoting discrimination, border on hate speech. There is existing legislation covering this sort of nonsense in the ACT Discrimination Act. Perhaps the ACT Human Rights Commission should administer it. It’s the vibe.

His views on marriage are warped, does anyone know if he is married or has a family?

Despite trying his background is full of mysterious gaps and abstract allusions to life changing realisations. But aside from declaring his 30yrs of writing of never wrong on Politics, his bio says little.

I really want to know what he was doing for decades before he finally got his Science degree, and why his employment with Canberra Hospital (thankfully for the patients) lasted only 6 mths.

I suspect there’s a lot more to this guy than is immediately apparent.

Hey I ran his tweet.

Guys like these, and those who oppose them, are tediously predictable.

He’s just a lonely nut.

If he actually looked like winning a seat he’d be interesting.

Cough.
If we all spent as much time thinking about homosexuals and gay sex as he does, we’d be disgusted too.

So, its says he`s a ‘Consultant Psychologist’. Could this be a little semantic twist (he does have a probable IQ of 160) meaning he`s a person who needs to consult many a psychologist?

I actually feel sick at the thought that this was the ‘psych’ I was allocated when I used the EPA through my workplace .. sure I saw him for professional reasons, my workplace was/is really getting me down and I was having a hard time getting work anywhere else (so not for personal/relationship reasons thank goodness) .. but I do remember him bragging about his ‘intelligence level’ and saying something along the lines of ..’well if you’re pregnant no one in their right mind should hire you .. ‘.

The feedback on the video is really distressing. He clearly shouldn’t be practicing with such extreme, hurtful views.

I’m a bit confused with all the haters.

I mean, at least this clown is making himself known – He’s not an anonymous c###.

All the easier to avoid, and if your kids have married one of his, bahahaha, too bad!

Influx of foul mouthed abuse over my views on sodomy – not surprised as people who abuse themselves will not hold back on me.

Now that sounds like bad fan fiction, perhaps the public would be nicer if he didnt ram his opinions down others throats. As for sex before marriage, something about him says to me he didnt get much in college and that he may have a discount mail order spouse.

Now about that foul mouthed abuse…………. Fill Poo Cock. There, it has been said and done.

Oh yes he also hates loud music ………………

Unfortunately I know this man, he has lived alone at Northbourne flats for 15+ years which apparently qualifies him to be an expert on everyone else’s sex lives & yes he is also a misogynist that believes the wife obeys whatever the husband says and roughing them up is OK. The really scary thing is he has been employed among other things as a wardsman at the psych unit, a psychologist for ACT Health & is used as an “expert” witness in court cases. I also saw his name down as a volunteer counsellor for the tsunami victims?? I notice Zed article in tomorrows Times likens him to the Taliban?
If he gets any votes at all be very scared…..

Interesting looking at his twitter feed.

I’d been curious that Noel Towell had the time to be reading the catholic votes questionaires, but Phil went out of his way to push them at the CT.

I also love how his twitter feed is almost entirely followed (all 12 of them) by journalists looking for outrage to report on.

I’d like to encourage everyone to listen to 1:58 in the above video. Something special about the way Phil says “penile-vaginal intercourse” …

Phil’s twitter response now included.

And the other, more exciting, Pocock has started tweeting about PhilCock…

Given that all good dictators have crazy ideas and a moustache, I have no doubt that Philip Pocock will be the first head of the Christian Caliphate of Australia. Look at Hitler, Stalin, Pinochet, Gadafi, Videla, Franco and Frank Zappa, all crazy and moustachioed dictators.

I am not gay, but I feel sorry for this guy taking out his anger on the gay community because he is very protective about his image and about the image that moustaches have these days and he will do all in his power to take it back from the gay man.

He must live in a world where the militant handlebar moustachioed, chapless jean wearing, leather taxi hat crowd, which he saw in the Police academy movies, is massing its forces and he is sure that they will one day will try to enact a fabulus coup d’etat and take over the whole of local government……..and he is the only one who can stop it.

He has been quoted as saying:

Maybe he is like this because, and bear in mind that i am making this up as i go along, I imagine that he was brutally accosted by 2 men walking home drunk one night from Kippax Tavern. He had to beat them off with this bare hands and the experience changed him forever as they had to be gay because there were 2 of them and they were both blokes. They must have been attracted to the Chevron style stache’ on his top lip as this is the mark of an alpha male and they would have seen this as a pipecleaner of sorts, all these thoughts I imagine would have have been running through his head.

Why else could be so anti gay, did he show up at a media release only to find Andrew Barr was wearing the same tie or an even better tie than him?

Poppycock Pocock is at it again! He was a regular letter writer to The Canberra Times a few years back and always attracted a barrage of ridicule whenever his letters were published. Still, it is reassuring that all the nutjobs aren’t only in The Greens and on the left of politics. The right of politics can produce eccentrics as well.

schmeah said :

OMG this guy is a registered psych who does work through the public service employee assistance program ..

O … M … Fn … GOD.

Yep. About three employers ago, I walked into a very reputable psych practice, basically for a bit of a head-check, a one-off. After this guy came out (boom boom) and did the meet and greet, I did a bit of a geo-spatial smoke and mirrors trick and ran shaking from the building.

I worked with him (mercifully only briefly) in the mid-1980s. Seriously scary stuff. I would be having some very harsh questions for the certifying board of the Head Shrinks Australia.

Later that day, O’Malley’s provided a rather effective pint of therapy for about $7. Considerably less than the dept would have been charged for me to go to the shrink.

It’s really sad because this guy and others of his ilk really give the good ones a bad name. At the same place, I saw an amazing professional in 1998 who, in the space of an hour, gave me a blinding insight by getting me to do the reflecting. And from 200? to 2009, I also would periodically see another awesome psych — again, for basic check-ups — whose strength also lay in reflection techniques.

Deterministic, ‘thou shalt’ nonsense like this guy’s stuff is just a little sad and pathetic.

He’s definitely going to win the female vote too!
From his site: “If all married women (about 70% over a lifetime) were out of the salaried workforce and all housing units were purchased on a one income basis we would quickly return to a more sustainable and equitable housing market, more akin to the 1980 period for instance. While this is clearly not a problem the ACT government can fix the problem is exacerbated here because of the high numbers of married or women or women in de facto relationships in the APS on high salaries in conjunction with highly salaried partners. As usual the market says “they can so they will’ for essential items but at least half of residences still have to compete on a one income basis, whether for rent or purchase. “

I wonder if he ever, even for a moment, looks at himself and asks the question ‘Am I a nutter?’.

The only purpose I can see this guy serving is to make some of the more hardliners not look quite so ridiculous.

Of course, it’d only be the female hetrosexual ones if he did!

Over Skype?

Yes, it’s called online Po-cocking!

OMG this guy is a registered psych who does work through the public service employee assistance program ..

O … M … Fn … GOD.

/me mumbles darkly that the Government regulating what sex acts consenting adults may do in private is about as absurd as regulating what plants they may inhale.

Is he for real?

I hope not. I really hope not. If this dumbarse is both a) A practicing psychologist and b) Serious about running for political office on this platform of quasi-religious, rape justifying psycho babble, that would make me a saaaaad panda.

Any alleged Christian who goes around justifying rape on the basis of marriage being a contract of consent should probably read the rest of the damned book and think about the inherent contradictions involved in making such a statement. On the other hand, there’s always the possibility he’s just a sad, bitter little man who is theoretically aware of the existence of female reproductive organs but has never found a woman crazy enough to show them to him in person, and so is hellbent on justifying the horribly twisted thoughts running around his skull by any means he can find. In which case his religion is the least of his problems.

Anyway, his website makes reference to him having an email address, but I can’t find it on there, anyone else bothered to look around there long enough to find it? I’m keen on sending this knob jockey an email enquiring as to what his plan is for avoiding cranky feminists repeatedly kicking him in the nadgers as he goes about town, now that he’s gone all high profile.

Pretty funny that someone who is anti-gay can have their surname pronounced ‘poo-cock’.

I think for further giggles you should have a look at his website. It also includes a rant about how MENSA is conspiring against recognising his superior intelligence.

So that is what Mr Gillespie looks like…

I can’t bring myself to watch the video because I already made the mistake of Googling his responses to the questions put forward by canberracatholicsvote. Frightening stuff.

I just… don’t know what to say. c_c has pretty much summed it up.

Wow. What a [Po]cock.

I pulled the plug after two minutes coz i couldn’t take any more. One only needs to remove the Po from his surname and enough said!

This guy has a poster put up illegally on gov property at red hill shops. I will be very interested in how many primary votes he gets. I hope it is sub 100

Is he for real?

At least I know what his ugly arse looks like now. I certainly plan to let him know what I think of his proposed policies should I ever be unfortunate enough to see him in person. I know he’s going to get Darkdfalz’s vote though, which depresses me. Unless of course they are one and the same.

That’s several minutes that I won’t ever get back. I don’t think it’s an “option” as to whether to put him last. Thanks for the heads up … and Mr Evil – is it possible that he protesteth too much?

In the tightly run race to see who will be last on the ballot paper we have a winner.

The Crimes with an update, including an assurance from Pocock that he doesn’t quite condone ‘poofter bashing’

It may be worth a member of the public reporting him to the Psychology Board of Australia. His views are certainly pretty out-there.

MHW

Any minute now, Phil will whip out the piece of paper which certifies that he is a genius. I’ve seen it. He’s making the Libs look totally bolshy.

What a horrible little man. Looks like a rather forgettable Doctor Who alien with special powers of Tedium. What he is saying is obnoxious, but I fell asleep before the end of the video.

I’ve never met a psychology graduate who wasn’t, in some ways, “damaged goods” before deciding to embark on their career.

My prejudices have just been reinforced.

I wonder if he shags his patients?

Of course, it’d only be the female hetrosexual ones if he did!

For someone so obviously mentally defective, it’s scary to see this guy is apparently a psychologist. That said I would hope most people would have the good sense not to buy the services of a shrink who does sessions over Skype and accept payment via Paypal.

His views on his own website are ridiculous, including the ridiculous assertion that:

“[Sex] is not something that should just be left to individuals, in the privacy of their bedroom… governments do have a role in managing sexuality if they are to maintain good order and stability.”

Some choice quotes from the video:

“The notion that a woman has the right to refuse to have sex with her husband on a whim is really a development of feminism in the 21st century…”

“Sure he can assault her, but rape is the forcible taking possession of a woman… without the rational consent that underlines marriage.”

Philip Pocock, if you read this, this is what I have to say to you:

Your views are an abomination to half a century of legal development, and an even longer period of social development.

They stand in stark contrast to the morals a majority of society now hold, and are repugnant to common sense, contemporary social norms and the law.

They are the views of a bigoted, narrow minded and unintelligent individual, and are an indication of deep seeded psychological issues.

Your views are in direct conflict with your duties as a practitioner and you should not be allowed to practice.

Since you’re a fan of bible quotes, I’ll leave you with this advice:

O simple ones, learn prudence; O fools, learn sense.
