.. And Cyclists Wonder Why They Get Such A Hard Time in Canberra?

By Katietonia 11 June 2009 69

Driving my merry way to work this morning, doing the speed limit, I was shocked when a cyclist appeared out of nowhere right in front of me, having not stopped at the side of the road to give way like he should have.

After I slammed on the brakes to avoid hitting him, he then shouted at me to **** off! If you’re going to ride around refusing to obey the road rules at least have the courtesy not to tell the people you’ve scared by refusing to give way to **** off.

Good morning Canberra, how I have missed you.

What’s Your opinion?

I thought roads were built for motorised vehicles and bike paths for bikes?

Is it tough finding you’re wrong?

This cyclist may well have done the wrong thing, but you say you’ve lived in the Netherlands – surely you’re more acquiescent to the cyclists point of view?

All I hear is “Waah, a mean and nasty cyclist shouted at me while I drove behind him in my 2-ton 150kw steel cage!”

Ginnus – cyclists are fined for traffic infringements, so you can abolish that fantasy of yours. They are not subject to the same road rules as you, btw – they have their own. Some are the same, some are different – EG, cyclists can hook turn at any intersection. Go read them: http://www.tams.act.gov.au/move/driver_licence/Road_Rules_Handbook (particularly part E)

Perhaps also consider that in a crash, whether with a car or something else, a cyclist is likely to injured – and no cyclist actually desires to be injured. A car driver, however, is unlikely to be injured in a collision with a cyclist.

What exactly should the cyclist expect to have driving behind him on a road – a horse and cart? A girl on a pony? A rat in a runaway wheel?

As much as I hate to speak ill of my fellow cyclists, I saw a great one yesterday… Cyclist on road vs cyclist on crossing – neither gave way. It was very close, they almost swapped carbon and alloy components as they swerved to avoid each other. Luckily, there were no cars on the road as they may have both ended up squished.

Haha, that is excellent!

Enjoy your early morning steel coffin stress sessions tomorrow.

Ill have a relaxing meander in on my bike utilising our great bike path network, absorbing a pure snap frozen and crystalline beauty that is Canberra Winter Mornings, and if that was not relaxing enough, the hot shower and coffee at the end will be a great start to my working day.

Pacis exsisto vobis totus

+1 If anyone really cares 🙂

i care, deckard. i don’t use it often [nor do you, ftm] but agree that quoting a post and appending ‘+1’ is a very handy shortcut to save one typing out what one was anyway about to; but just read…

go on, someone do it…

Driving my merry way to work this morning, [insert assertion to imply good driving skills], I was shocked when a [insert other road user group – woman, Lebanese guy, cyclist, truck driver, taxi, guy in chicken suite riding a moped etc] appeared out of nowhere right in front of me, [best not to mention that appearing out of nowhere really means – I wasn’t paying enough attention] having [insert whatever indiscretion takes your fancy] to give way like he should have ….

Now go to work all in a lather, post your sorry little tale on Riot ACT and wait for the glow of confirmation.
