And the Mully Cup for May 2012 goes to Justin Monfries. The circle is complete

mully cup

It was a hard fought month for the Mully Cup. In any other month the police helicopter or the School of Music could have been worthy winners.

But taking up the last spot on our first hubcap it is entirely appropriate to award the May Mully to Justin Monfries.

In a world with any justice we could trade him for getting Linda Cox back, but sadly that’s not how things work. Enjoy your Mully Justin. There are a great many other people who’ve achieved amazing things in the list of winners, but this is your prize.

Sure, give jest about some online rant or a football player getting a bj from a dog .. but Justin Monfries killed a person and left another with serious injuries. This riduculous “prize” for his recklessness (while memorialising that other dead-beat Mully’s) is nothing short of shameless.

This whole mully prize bullcr@p is. It’s just another example of JB making himself feel better by belittling others.

Ummm RA is JB’s sandpit. It’s his you see. He can do what he likes. He makes the rules on his own blog site. It’s a benevolent (somewhat) dictatorship. We come here because of that. If the balance shifts and we no longer like it, we can go play in another sandpit.

This ‘award’ is based on the number of comments in a month, it mirrors the interest and activity of the riotactors. It’s not really intended to achieve a greater good as far as I can tell. *sigh*

I’m placing the blame entirely on you, RA’s denizens, for commenting on the Monfries thread so much. It’s like you wanted him to win it >:(

What? Has the world gone mad? Are people not getting that its a BAD thing to win this “cup” and that being associated with that Mully fool has negative connotations?

I feel like I’m taking crazy pills!

P.S I feel like I’ve been drinking heavily and smoking weed all day! :O

What?!! Has the world gone mad?! Are people unable to detect even the bluntest sarcasm anymore?

I think you are over-reacting or missing the point schmeah.

A couple of quotes from Johnboy in some of the original threads:

“So in Mully’s memory we’d like to commission a trophy for the most comment creating Canberran in a given month.”

“Each month it is awarded to the individual who has prompted the most contentious debate on the website.”

Personally havent read much of the thread, but it looks like Justin was the most “comment creating Canberran” for the month so he got the award. The trophy can (and has) go to people who did good, bad, or somewhere in between. Yes the trophy itself is something of a piss-take, but imo does nothing to take away from the seriousness of the subject matter.

Fine. Now that the Mully cup has done full circle, perhaps it is time to retire the Mully cup and put up an award for something else that celebrates the good and decent people of Canberra? Maybe a different award each year. We can have twelve months of celebrating charity acts this year? Next year, twelve months of awards for the biggest liar in politics? (that would be a fierce competition)

People still don’t know what the Mully cup is awarded for and still get needlessly outraged by it.

Why are there so many months online? Have a read about what the Molly cup is before being outraged about it.

the mullied gets to be the mully
all very muddied, that’s certain

The Mully Cup could not be more appropriately won. An absolute shitbag of society. Shame the poor innocent women who were his victims. A more appropriate result would have seen Monfries take out his dealer…

Monfries didn’t get the award for what he did. The thread got the award for the most replies…

I think you have have somewhat misunderstood the purpose of this ‘award’. It is not an award for the dimwit persay, but more a measure of Canberra public opinion regarding an event. In this case, the totally tragic outcomes related to our local piss poor revolving-door legal system.
I see this ‘award’ measure as quite useful. For example, if I were a local magistrate (say, the one that repeatedly let him out on bail to steal and run down innocent people), or a local MLA (with an election coming up, hint, hint), it may now actually dawn on me that, wow, the public really seems *pissed* at the current legal system workings. Then, if I were one of those people, I may use this information to try to make a positve change that would actually help my local community – and myself! Think of it as a free ‘focus group’ on public opinion…. Let’s hope those that can have some effect on changing/tweaking the legal system actually read RA!
Hmmm, perhaps the award should have gone to the Justice/magistrate…

Since you obviously know who Justin “the Mully” Williams was, and what he did to gain his notoriety, shouldn’t you be offended at the awards that went to good people, rather then some douchebagel who totally Mully’ed up his life?

I do not think that cup means what you think it means.

Thoroughly agree. I’ve always found this whole concept to be extremely poor in taste. What point does this serve? Memorializing a person who killed and awarding it to other people who kill in similar acts of anti-social behaviour is wrong. This “prize” for the month degrades the RiotAct in my opinion. What’s the goal here? To encourage people to win this? What kind of people are attracted to this? Is this was RA is about?

If a monthly RA award must be given, perhaps a better application would be to award it to those who have served the community and died/suffered at the hands of injustice? Positive, not negative.

Agreed, definitely in poor taste.
