Sports Minister Andrew Barr has proudly announced that Canberra will get two A-League soccer games later in the year:

On 4 September the Central Coast Mariners will take on Perth Glory and on 31 October they will take on Adelaide United.

Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation, Andrew Barr said the games are great news for Canberra’s football fans and the ACT’s tourism operators.

No word yet on what jerseys he’s picked out for them.

No, real football is played in England, Spain, Italy, Brazil etc. This is an extremely poor imitation.

Well Gold Coast United didn’t seem to struggle too much with Fulham of the much vaunted English Premier League last night. 2-1 to the Gold Coast. Stick that in yer pipe and smoke it ya bawbag.

+1!!!!

For those of you that like the local game and would like to hear some Canberra blokes in deep discussion on the topic, tune into the Far Post Football show on Sunday afternoons from 3 to 5

Great music too!

Should be tremendous for both Canberrans that turn up

Don’t be such a sh1tter on the A-League then ND. I know it ain’t great, but it’s all we’ve got (for the moment).

Obviously that was in response to #13 rather tha #15, the point of which I concur with entirely.

Tedious Jim, tedious. I am extremely interested in Marist under 11 first grade (my youngest son is their midfield enforcer), the mighty Queens Park Rangers (they’ve never participated in the ECL, though I did go and see them in Belgrade in the UEFA cup in the early eighties – does that count?) and Wycombe Wanderers. However I will be in Madrid in October and I am hoping to watch Real or Atletico in action in the greatest club football competition in the world. Despite my terrible delusions of grandeur, I’d be happy to tell anyone I’m a football fan.

#14 = troof!

The big money that is behind football is a lot better than the NRL and AFL at covering a lot of stuff up.

It is, however, worth noting that a lot of the more established leagues (Premier League, for example) do have some very positive schemes in place for younger players, trying to get them involved in education for a life beyond football.

George, there are commensurately too many instances of football player misbehaviour to list. I note you chose to ignore the Man United scandal of last season. What about Thomas Ujfalusi’s international career-ending hotel-prostitute-juxtaposition from last year (and it wasn’t his forst offence, either)?

Dirt is wherever you care to look for it. Ronaldo and his cross dressing faux pas? Unfortunately overpaid, under-educated athletes will continue to deliver the goods to hungry tabloid journalists whenever the situation presents itself, and irrespective of the code they practice. To try and present football as some whiter than white, butter-wouldn’t melt sport is naive at best, and downright mendacious at worst.

Oh bah. The music analogy completely works. You’ve stretched it to the point of ridiculousness.

$34 for a top-end seat seems entirely reasonable – and if you don’t want to pay that much you can pick up a ticket for $17.

I’ll support the A-League games because I love football and would like to see the quality of the league increase and wider support for the game grow.

You can get snobby about it if you want, but don’t try to tell anyone that you’re a football fan if all you’re interested in is teams from the European Champions League.

LOL….., is that the best you can do Bambucco. Football is played by thousands and thousands of professional players around the world. I only listed a few recent incidents from the Rugby and Aussie Rules codes which are only represented by hundreds of professional players. If you have to way back to Georgie Best well the world game is in good shape.

I didn’t know about the salary cap.

Regardless, my point still stands, the A-League will grow in quality as it grows in popularity. Bums on seats = revenue (advertising and otherwise) that can be spent on on better players. Increased popularity will mean greater incentives for retaining a certain level of home-grown talent and attracting a better quality of international player.

Obviously we don’t have anything like Premier League or the Serie-A, but that’s no reason to sh1t on the game. Do you refuse to watch local bands because they’re not as good as Iron Maiden?

Jim, I don’t have any argument with you, or your opinion. You’re approaching the game with common sense. You are not part of the ‘Bid4Canberra’/Fox sports cabal trying to convince people that the A-League is anything other than the fourth rate entertainment it really is.

The music analogy doesn’t really work. If a local band that wasn’t as good as Iron Maiden asked me to go and see them twelve times in a short period of time (ie a football season)and pay $34 for the priviledge every time then no, I wouldn’t go. Would you?

It’ll be like watching real football… but without the excitement. Or indeed skill.

Or the cost.

I agree…it would be much better if we had Aussie Rules and Rugby games in town so we can have their players walking naked around and defecating on the floor, glassing their girlfriends in the face, gang-bangs in motel rooms and toilet cubicles, rape cases, abusing drugs and alcohol, vandalising property and drink-driving. Now that takes real skill and is very exciting.

And football players don’t do this?

Just off the top of my head…

Clive Walker (indecent exposure)
Peter Shilton and Bryan Robson (‘toilet incident’)
Clayton Blackmore (alledged rapist)
the celebrated Manchester United hotel gang bang last season…

Unfortunately, George, you don’t have a leg to stand on in the player misbehaviour stakes. Have you heard of George Best?

It is real football you numpty. They use their feet, and not hands.

The quality of play isn’t gonna get any better if the league doesn’t get any support, is it?

Well, yes, it is, actually. You could remove the salary cap for a start so teams can afford to attract decent players instead of people who can’t get a game anywhere else.
