Andrew Barr gets a slap on CTP

In the ongoing debacle of Compulsory Third Party Insurance in the ACT the Liberals Brendan Smyth is taking some joy from Andrew Barr’s discomfort over not finishing his homework:

The Legislative Assembly today punished Andrew Barr for his failure to comply with the law, without objection from his Labor colleagues. The motion, driven by ACT Deputy Opposition Leader Brendan Smyth, follows Andrew Barr’s failure to present the Compulsory Third Party (CTP) Insurance Scheme review to the Assembly in accordance with the law.

“Despite numerous claims from the ACT Government that the review of the CTP scheme would be completed, as required by legislation by early January 2012, the Government has not delivered its report to the Assembly,” Mr Smyth said.

“Section 275 of the Road Transport (Third Party Insurance) Act clearly states the Minister must review the operation of the Act as soon as practicable after the end of its third year of operation, and must present a report on the review to the Legislative Assembly within three months after the day the review is started.

Aside from giving Mr Smyth bragging rights we’re not sure what has been achieved.

The CTP situation in the ACT is pretty pathetic.

Agreed. And the longer the delay, the more NRMA continues to make out of the deal.

How about “holding the government accountable”? Isn’t that one of the opposition’s duties? Hopefully it’s just the beginning and some action will result. The CTP situation in the ACT is pretty pathetic.
