The ABC is reporting that Andrew Barr has won the recount for Ted Quinlan’s vacant seat in the ACT Legislative Assembly.

He would appear to also covet Ted’s old role as “the sane one” with this comment on Government finances:

I see the immediate priority for the Government is to return the Territory budget to surplus, which will provide the necessary funds to rebuild public infrastructure such as schools, hospitals, roads and footpaths and to improve housing affordability

A look over the candidate questionaire Andrew returned to us before the last election also reveals he is unusual in ALP circles in favouring the Brumbies over the Raiders.

Now the next question will be who get’s the ministerial vacancy?

UPDATED: The Canberra Times has caught up with the story. This interesting line from Our Brave Leader:

he valued Mr Barr’s experience and commitment to the Labor Party.

There’s a potential MLA who’s commitment to the party he doubts?

A subject studied as part of an Arts degree gives you a strong background in something? Who’d have thought that?

Mal, Andrew was NOT being “economical with the truth”. He does have a strong background in economics. He studied Economics for 3 years at ANU as PART of his Arts degree (a very tough course) and has displayed a longstanding interest in economic issues in ALP forums.

Shock-jock Mike Jeffreys asked him this morning if he was married and had kids etc. He said no that he lived with his partner Anthony. Jeffreys also asked him if they planned to get married under the new Nero gay marriage laws and Barr said “he was still waiting on Anthony to ask him.”…how sweet!

bonfire-just who else is lining up to run for the little house on the prairie?

just what the ALP and assembly need – another party hack.

Not a very promising start. One media conference, & it seems he’s already been “economical with the truth” to the people of Canberra. The CT says he has an Arts degree, & he’s worked for backbenchers & media monitors most his adult life – yet he is claiming “a background in economics”! A taste of things to come?
