ABC Online has an interesting story in which a farmer’s “Buy Australian” push has met with a spectacular piece of f*ckwittery by one agriculture counsellor with the US Embassy in Canberra, Andrew Burst.

It’s just doesn’t sound to me that it’s in the spirit of free trade.

Like the US has never seen a “Buy American” campaign? Oh please, no seriously, if I laugh any harder red wine is going to be all over the place.

We’re not even talking about a government funded campaign. Frankly if produce was labelled by country of origin it WOULD influence my purchasing decisions. (But, as previously mentioned, I am a schmuck).

Anyway well done Andrew, sent to represent a country widely considered to be untrustworthy hypocrites, at a critical time, you’ve done wonders.

Hands up who is surprised that an American senior diplomat has made an arse of himself.

I take it from the fact that I can’t see anyone but the idiot in the next cubicle, that all hands are down.

So why does it feel so good when we bitch about it?

Becasue it’s always nice to see that our prejudices and stereotypes are valid and justified.

Welcome to the new world of the FTA. Australia got seriously done over by the septics.

“If I laugh any harder red wine is going to be all over the place.”

Does this mean you’re posting under the influence?

W.A is showing the way (as it does in the footy),however in other states labeling will be resisted. There is a higher markup on cheaply sourced produce and if Coles can keep its customers guessing they may even assume its local.
In the U.S version of free trade, tell me Andrew?,how much is your subsidy program worth.

Likewise I was flabbergasted by the article, so obviously the FTA from the US Agriculture attache perspective is a way for over subsidised US farmers to get new markets whilst ensuring that no other countries superior cheaper produce competes for their local market.

The buy American campaigns are endemic and part of the idea of Patriotism in the US.

I’m amazed this character was allowed anywhere near a media outlet. I am no fan of our whining subsidised lifestyle farmers, admittedly many are highly efficient, but the US is about senate votes and the hypocrisy of the statement is astounding.
