The local Federal member for Fraser, Andrew Leigh, has launched his new book this week. It’s called Battlers & Billionaires: The Story of Inequality in Australia, and has received a critique over at Core Economics, which also gives you a decent flavour of what the book’s actually about.

Personally, I’d prefer more Australian politicians caring, thinking and acting on inequality than pretending these things don’t matter.

Ironically written by someone who will not only earn shitloads more than most of us but will also end up with a pension greater than most of us will ever make per annum.

Yep, battlers….

Actually as someone who entered Parliament after 8 October 2004, Leigh won’t be eligible for the old Parliamentary pension – new members instead receive contributions into a superannuation account of their choice, similar to the way in which salaried workers receive employer superannuation contributions. How much he ends up getting in total of course depends on how long he stays in Parliament.

This week’s Four Corners had a look at the battlers, including single parents on Newstart.

The title sounds a little Gillardian – of its time? Class warfare a la Wayne Swan?
