Andrew Leigh has blogged a survey seeking your views on Australia’s humanitarian intake:

My latest survey is on Australia’s humanitarian migrant intake. I’m interested in hearing from everyone, although I will take particular note of the responses from the Fraser electorate (given that they’re the people I have the honour to represent).

I’m calling “cynical data mining – without the privacy controls that apply to all non-politicians”. Leigh has access to sophisticated polling. He doesn’t need a dodgy online poll to find out what his electorate think, and he knows it.
Would Andrew care to assure readers that he will not be harvesting & crossmatching personal data from this “poll”?

Yeah.

I’ve seen Mr Leigh in action a couple of times. He’s a very intellligent, witty and engaging man. I’d say he’s smarter than most of those around him by at least an order of magnitude.

This unsubtle and clumsily populist effort seems like something dreamed up by one is his shambling party minders to impress the dim in the electorate. Either that, or he was having a bit of a bad day.

Andrew should know that the question about increasing humanitarian intake needs to be qualified. A LOT of people would answer “Yes, provided the increase allows more refugees languishing in camps in East and North Africa in, rather than allowing boat people to take up the entire allocation (which is unfortunately what has happened, according to Labor itself). ” So they aren’t actually able to answer the question as it stands.

I’m guessing that he’s going to get some strong responses from a few Concerned Citizens that live up that way.

The Koncerned Kittyzens of Kanberra and their ilk (along with their polar opposites) rarely give “responses” per se, reactions yes, responses usually have the connotation of some thought process having gone into said response
