The ABC brings word that Simon Corbell Andrew Barr is going to roll out an extra six hundred FREE parking spaces in Civic by the end of August.

Well, near Civic anyway, it’s the Acton car park that’s getting the expansion.

After Floriade (co-incidentally – we’re sure – after the election too) it will be converted into paid parking.

UPDATED: And the media release is now online.

It’s probably just an excuse to build more toilet blocks so people like Andrew can hang around them.

It’s just the temporary carpark that was originally opened up for free then they closed it off to make it a proper carpark and slug the people who want to walk for 25 minutes as a revenue raiser. Only difference now is that they will be finishing it off and keeping it only for floriade for a couple of weeks, then making people pay. Probably great for people who want to start work after 9am, free days parking.

Canberra wastes so much space with open air single street level car parks. Why not build more multi-story and/or underground car parks? It should be mandantory for every new building (offices and shops, not residential housing) to have underground parking. I was driving past the Epicentre (Fyshwick’s version of Brand Depot) and the space the carpark takes up is bigger than the actual building.

Back in 1988 I think it was I went to Brisbane to see Expo and nearly every office building there had underground parking, mostly multi-level too. We don’t seem to have come to far in 20 years.

Is that the ‘Floriade’ carpark area?

Unfortunately public transport here is not at all suited to things like having to drop kids into daycare on your way to work and pick up a loaf of bread on the way home, or pick your sick kid up from school and get them to a doctor.

Discouraging driving isn’t helping much – encouraging alternative transport is a much more effective means of bringing about change.

Encouraging people to drive isn’t helping the environment any

This is a very good initiative so thanks Andrew.

Free parking will encourage people to arrive early to access the free parking thus bringing more people into the city prior to peak hour.

Yes it will be a tip top few months as we enjoy a miniscule decrease in traffic.

The government giveth and the government taketh away.

Do you like my lithp?
