Annette Ellis off to New York for three months

By johnboy - 6 August 2009 16

It will surprise some to learn that Annette Ellis is the Member for Canberra in the Commonwealth Parliament.

For others it will be a surprise to learn, via the Canberra Times, that she’s off to New York for three months.

Member for Canberra Annette Ellis has landed one of two highly prized spots as a parliamentary delegate to the UN General Assembly in New York.

The Labor MP will be joined by long-serving Nationals MP Paul Neville.

They will be based in the Department of Foreign Affairs office in New York, and will be working with the department for three months, from September 12 to early December.

There’s speculation it’s a victory lap before making way for Kevin Rudd’s protege Alistair Jordan to enter the Parliament in his own right.

But will anyone notice?

Annette Ellis is a hardworking member, only she doesn’t blow her own trumpet. If you want something done, go and see her, as she not only listens, but does her best for her constituents. Good luck to her, it’s not like she will be bludging will there, but will be working on Australia’s behalf. Tall poppy syndrome is obviously still alive and well!

which planet do you live on?
they only thing that she has worked hard on is the junk mail crap that comes in the mail ever few months and gets duly disposed of in the (recycling) bin without being read. All local federal labor members seem to only give a stuff about their constituents every 3 years when the election rolls around. Sending the odd flyer out in the mail every 6 months doesn’t count as being a representative. By the way, who’s the member for Fraser? I don’t remember seing him anywhere since 2007?

You forgot to mention your very good mate Gary out. How you could’ve overlooked the dud of all local political duds says something, doesn’t it; your brain is failing.

Following a redistribution of seats in the ACT, Bob was elected as Member for Fraser in October 1998 and was appointed Shadow Minister for Industry and Technology and Manager of Opposition Business in the House of Representatives. In September 2000 Bob was appointed the Shadow Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs, Reconciliation and the Arts and continued as the Manager of Opposition Business in the House of Representatives. Following the Federal election in November 2001, Bob was appointed Shadow Treasurer.

Since the election of the Rudd Labor Government in 2007, Bob is now the Parliamentary Secretary for International Development Assistance.

They must be really ‘highly prized’ spots if they are sending a Labor non-entity and someone from the Nationals. I mean I could just see them dominating the selection criteria.

Breathing………Yes
Nothing else to do in Parliament and could be missed for 3 months without any ill effect………..Yes

Hope she’s not stuck in the UN GA for the whole three months ‘cos the debates can get a bit dreary and are often not in English.
Sure they’re translated but the listening devices are cheap and nasty.
There’s a very good coffee bar near the meeting room.
The self-flushing toilets are a bit disconcerting at first.
Ah, memories.

Junket?

Annette is one of the shining stars that almost redeem the sorry bunch of ageing adolescents that carry on like pork chops on Capital Hill. I see her at many functions, and have had the honour of sharing a table with her at a dinner a couple of months ago. Her conversation was stimulating, not a bit tinged with that sense of spruiking for the Labor Party, and she was genuinely engaged in the chatter of the table, and didn’t seem at all like she was working, although it was pretty clear that one or two of the other guests had an agenda to pursue with her.

10 points for Annette.

The UN – who are they?

caf 11:58 am 06 Aug 09

They’re pretty keen on selling wheat and mutton to the rest of the world.

Jim Jones 11:57 am 06 Aug 09

Why have they appointed a Nationals MP as delegate to the UN General Assembly? Don’t the Nationals abhor the rest of the world?

Jivrashia 11:43 am 06 Aug 09

Well… she’s going to work there as an Australia representative. It’s not like some retiring MP who studied abroad at the tax payer’s expense (until the whistle was blown on them).

But really, who is Annette??

bannister 10:57 am 06 Aug 09

Good luck Annette we’ll catch up once again when you return.

muFasa 10:15 am 06 Aug 09

isn’t this the sort of thing one does just before they retire from politics? Is there a political stoush for the Labor preselection of Canberra coming up???

RAGD 10:12 am 06 Aug 09

I am jealous. Three months in New York would be sweet.
