It looks like the ACT Government are going to have yet another crack at proposals for redeveloping the Yarralumla Brickworks for a mixture of residential and tourist uses. (At time of writing no articles online with the ABC or Canberra Times to cross-reference).
The brickworks have had a long and distinguished past as an integral part of Canberra’s history and heritage. A comprehensive timeline of significant events can be found HERE
Over time there are been several attempts to redevelop the brickworks. One of the most notable events in the process being a fiery public meeting in 2000 with sensational footage ending up on local TV as two prominent local individuals went fisticuffs over the control of a microphone. (I was actually at that meeting – and it was a wake up call as how passionate individuals can be about planning issues in their local suburbs). The area at that time was even being considered as an alternative location for Floriade. The events and interest shown by the community were recorded in the Legislative Assembly Hansard HERE (unfortunately the media and blogging back in 2000 was not as pervasive as it is today so it is hard to find good online articles)
Then in 2005 the Labor Government under then planning Minister Corbell authorised yet another study HERE. The outcome of the planning study basically went nowhere other than the Govenrment recognising that the site was of significant heritage value HERE.
Through the entire process the Yarralumla Residents Association have continued to be vocal and concerned about the future of the Brickworks.
It will be interesting to see what comes from the new studies that the Government are currently undertaking.
