Another chance at same-sex civil unions?

Back in December the ACT Government introduced a bill for same-sex couples’ civil unions, but it was put to the side when it seemed possible the federal Parliament would legalise same-sex marriage.

The bill is going to be reconsidered next month. It won’t be bringing any great changes – same-sex couples can already register civil partnerships in the ACT – but Attorney-General Simon Corbell believes it’s “another step closer to equality“.

Apparently, the only differences from past legislation are the creation of a ‘civil union celebrant’ who can make relationships legally binding, and only same-sex couples are included in the scheme.

The bill needs the ACT Greens’ approval to go through, seeing as the Liberals have already refused, and it seems unlikely that will happen.

Hey if two consenting adults want to get married – who are we to tell them they shouldn’t? And can’t the government do more than one thing at a time? Really? Most adults can do that….

Personally it isn’t an issue for me but I know several jewellers, florists and caterers who would love the extra revenue…..

Give them what they want so I don’t have to listen to their whinging for the rest of my middle aged life FFS…

And before anybody gets on my case about whingers getting what they want I want you to remember for example, women getting the vote, the 40 hour working week etc etc.

This is only a “civil rights and equality” issue in the minds of the tiny fringe of weirdo propagandists who’ve claimed it is. There is no “right” to get married. Get over it. We’re bored of hearing about this absurd nonsense all the time..

I’d be interested in hearing what your objections are to this. I used to be dead-set against it but when someone actually asked me to explain why, I really could not come up with a valid reason. After consideration I completely changed my mind.

I’m not asking you to change your mind, or even trying to get you to change it. But I am interested in what rationale you have for objecting to it.

I understand people objecting because of religious beliefs, but that didn’t apply to me and from what you have previously posted it shouldn’t apply to you.

Like I said, once I sat down and thought about it, I could not see any reasonable objection that a thinking person could have.

I can’t beleive that such a thing as a “spouse visa” exists. Years ago, a wife used to have to get written permission from her spouse to transact certain financial transactions but a “spouse visa”?

yes the world is a straaaange and mysterious place.

just because civil rights and equality isn’t a REAL issue in your small mind, doesn’t mean it isn’t important to others.

Yeah, you might want to look in the mirror for that “tiny fringe of weirdo propagandists”.

apparently 53% of australian christians support gay marriage, that number going up to 62% for people of other religions and 67% for people with no religion with overall support at 60%.

it’s the loud-mouthed bigots who are holding it back, not a tiny fringe of activists who are pushing it forward. (http://www.australianmarriageequality.com/wp/a-majority-of-christians-support-marriage-equality/)

For a moment I forgot that your personal opinions are what dictates the conventional thought of everyone in Australia and anyone who is concerned about other issues is a ‘tiny fringe of weirdo propagandists’.

Thanks for reminding me.

Although, somewhere I have this nagging suspicion that you’re on the wrong side of history … again.

Actually, it is a basic human right for consenting adults to be able to get married.

Plus housing is an ongoing expenive issue and will never be perfect for anyone. Simply making people equal actually makes a fair bit of cash (weddings cost money!) and the only people it makes angry are people who are going to be angry that gay people exist anyway.

Real issues like bring back thin plastic bags for you to carry you groceries home with? Is that up there with Housing, ect?

And THE PLASTIC BAG BAN!! *dribble* *froth* *dribble*

Real issues like plastic shopping bags?

they should just legalise gay marriage (again) and be done with it. force the federal gov’t to quash it (again), force labor to keep attempting to justify its absurd position of depriving basic rights to gay couples. if they are going to continue to betray a substantial part of their constituency they should at least be made to feel ashamed of it.

change is not going to magically appear, local groups and local gov’ts need to keep agitating for it.

Oh for God sake…..why can’t the Government spend public money on things that are useful to ALL society instead of wasting time/money catering for the fringe elements who twist and overinflate the idea of “equality” to their own ends??

It’s important, but not as important as solving our housing and health crises.

Real issues; you mean, like people stamping their tiny feet over plastic bag and firework bans?

Same sex people should be forced to marry so they can suffer along with the rest of us who are already married.

In a curious move, the Greens don’t want this to go through. They claim community groups want the government to wait and that it jeopardises the federal changes, something the government denies.

A big WTF?

Does anyone know if same-sex civil unions are recognised by Immigration for spouse visas?
