With the Airport yesterday launching its own consultation process for light rail in Canberra today we have Simon Corbell kicking off a Government round.

The ACT Government is seeking public input to an important preliminary design study for the Capital Metro light rail project, Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development, Simon Corbell, announced today.

Mr Corbell said the Light Rail Integration Study would look at issues associated with integrating the light rail corridor from Gungahlin to the City with the broader public transport network, as well as the requirements of intermodal stations and stops along the route.

“The Light Rail Integration Study is an essential piece of work that will inform the detailed design of the Capital Metro Project,” he said.

“It is part of the suite of preliminary design studies that are now being undertaken as a priority for the new Capital Metro Agency.”

The first stage of the Light Rail Integration Study will identify and evaluate options for:

— Integrating light rail with the ACTION bus network, and the pedestrian and bicycle path networks;

— Bike and ride locations, kiss and ride locations (drop off points) and park and ride locations; and

— Preferred light rail stop locations to optimise accessibility and integration.

That’s the best-case scenario. The worst-case scenario is that the process goes ahead and the ACT government needs to sign a secret deal (sorry “commercial-in-confidence”) that is attractive enough to get anyone to agree to take on the project. If you think ACTION is expensive wait till you see how much a commercial return is going to cost.

Vested interests will win.

If by vested interests you mean common-sense then good.

It’s a tram; that should be ding ding.

Well i filled in the survey at
http://www.capitalmetro.act.gov.au/light-rail-integration-study
to suggest a an all stops light rail to replace the bus is a waste of money. We need a rapid intertown connection, not a slow pick up everyone service down northbourne.
People won’t stop driving because its light rail. People will stop driving when the convenience of the public transport is higher than a car. Of course the way our government works, the way to do that is increase parking fees, reduce car parks and then put in a sub standard slow service.

Its too late for Gungahlin,

Its the perfect time for Molonglo and Jerrabomberra for the new office / commerce hub of Canberra.

Build High-rise apartments in Jerra, (inside ACT) and in-force a high limit (No less than 30 stories).

Make a loop between

Civic-Molonglo-Western Creek-Woden-Jerrabomberra-Queanbeyan-Airport-Civic

Later loop between civic Belconnen Gungahlin-Kowen/Majura-Civic

Finally Loop

Woden Tuggeranong-Jerrabomberra

No point duplicating the current roads people aren’t going to switch.

People leaving Sydney and moving to Canberra might not get a car if transport is there. These are likely to make up 90% of *New* Suburbs not old ones like Gungahlin. (Have to think by the time rail gets built)

you are all wasting your time. It will never be built. The planning process is just a charade to keep the Greens quiet. Vested interests will win. toot toot!

OK, maybe it’s a bit simplistic, but once you get that express line in and having it utilised, then you can start to expand the system to get your stops at the smaller centres like Kippax, Erindale, Curtin and Weston too…

This

This should be good…..

make sure you leave your comments somewhere they can be used.
I would think that with ACTION and Light Rail integrated, there could be express (proper express, with one stop at EPIC, one stop at Dickson then stop in the City) for the first proposed leg. Doesn’t really matter if it is Bus or Light Rail as the express (after a while analysis of the take up for each service could determine what services run for which mode). However, I would think light rail would be the express and ACTION the “usual, picturesque services”

As few stops as possible for me.

Civic, Dickson, Mitchell, Nullarbor Avenue in Harrison. and Gungahlin. Maybe one at EPIC. If there are any more than 4 stops, it will hardly be any quicker than driving/getting a bus.

I’d like to see it go underground after Dickson and cut under the racecourse. That’d make it super quick.

Not going to happen because most of the benefit from building the tram comes from the redevelopment of Northbourne Ave, which will require lots of stops.

I’ve always thought that the best way to implement light rail would be a single set of lines running from Tuggeranong, through Woden to Civic, then to Belconnen and Gungahlin (then return). Have them as an express, leaving every 5-10 minutes apart.
From the city, have a separate line to the Airport, doing a loop maybe around Fyshwick and Manuka
Then it’s up to Action to step up and provide a bus service that just goes from suburban stops to the nearest town centres.

+1 for this. If you could get on a train in any of the main town centres, and get off in any of the others without having to stop anywhere but town centres, it would be great (only exception – perhaps a stop somewhere along the route with adequate room for parking to encourage park and ride – somewhere like AIS would be perfect….). A second line to Russell/Fyshwick/Queenbeyan is also a good idea… Airport too if they pay for it up front in cash.

I really don’t see anything similar to a tram being a significant improvement over what ACTION already offers.

The first stage of the Light Rail Integration Study will identify and evaluate options for:
– Integrating light rail with the ACTION bus network, and the pedestrian and bicycle path networks;
– Bike and ride locations, kiss and ride locations (drop off points) and park and ride locations;

– How can you integrate with a bus network that is fundamentally broken from the core up? This will be a brilliant way to infect the new transport system with the problems ACTION currently suffer.

– If you try to integrate with bike and ride/ drop and ride locations you’re going to have a hard time. These aren’t exactly in areas that you’re going to be able to install light rail easily eg. Mawson shops, Philip Pool… or are we only talking about the Northside locations for this?

As stated in earlier comments, you can’t have a rapid transit system, and a convenient number of stops too. It’s one or the other. Personally (and this is just my opinion) I see both options set for failure. You’re either going to have nobody on it due to it stopping all the time and taking forever to get to a destination. Or you’re going to have nobody on it because they can’t get to one of the few stops easily.

And that’s the issue. It will probably have 10-20 stops. I want a rapid public transport system between towncentres. This will be as slow as the bus, so why bother. Most people don’t catch public transport in canberra, because of waiting times and transit times making it incovenient.

I’m happy though if said link can accomodate both all stops services and express services, although trams rarely do this and are usually all stops.
