The Age is reporting that yet another Canberran is facing gaol time after being caught speeding on the way to Melbourne.

The 24 year old man, who has not been named, was arrested on a charge of conduct endangering life Victoria’s North after being detected travelling at 210km/h in a 1993 Honda Coupe.

The man’s car has been impounded and he has been released to be charged on summons.

The comments of a few of Victoria’s top cops included in the article seem to suggest they have a fairly hefty book that they can’t wait to throw at him.

Your autobahn argument is novel and intriguing, and your assertions about the existence of a nanny state are an unusual take on this complicated issue. Thank you for your refreshing perspective.

Quite amusing, the road in question eclipses the standards on the autobahn and yet we have nanny state mentality that puts control freak speed limits on them. Victoria has more speed cameras and lowest tolerance yet they have one of their highest road tolls.

Oh yeah while other jurisdictions are still reducing their toll Victoria is increasing theirs – ah the benefits of draconnian policing and legislation.

About time. We haven’t had a jail vs gaol thread since October 2009. For those with short memories:

It’s been spelled gayhol, gayll, gaille, gayole, gayl, gaile, gaiell, gaill, gaole, goale, goal, and gaol. It’s also been spelled iaiole, iaile, iayle, iayll, iaole, jayl, jale, and jail. All of these spellings have been used by English speakers since the 13th and 14th centuries.

Last I remember we spoke the Queen’s English and not the monged up American English

It’s nothing to do with ‘British’ or ‘American’ English. It’s a French word, and the various spellings arose from differences in Northern or Norman French and that spoken in the south (Parisian French). The Norman ended up with a ‘G’, the Parisian with a ‘J’, and it’s the Parisian variant that survives today, with the ‘G’ version deemed ‘archaic’ and surviving only through statutory and official tradition.

1668 R. L’ESTRANGE Vis. Quev. (1708) 6 Some again are..boring their very Noses with hot Irons, in rage that they cannot come to a Resolution, whether they shall say Face or Visage; whether they shall say Jayl or Gaol; whether Cony or Cunny.

HOLY HELL thats fast. Canberra – Melb in a couple of hours.

No such word as ‘gaol’ ….. in what universe? Queanbeyan?

Last I remember we spoke the Queen’s English and not the monged up American English with their many Z’s and Mom. I also wonder how many people can correctly pronounce advertisement too haha.

I’m assuming it was an NSX? I don’t think my ’98 Integra would get up to 210km/h, let alone a ’93.

Meant to say the Honda driver not in the game, sorry.

Ah, someone who speaks the Presidents Bad English, as opposed to the Queens Good…

Was he carpooling?

I note this mistake has been made again by one of your contributors. The word jail is spelt J-A-I-L, not “gaol”. “Gaol” is pronounced “gay-oll” and there is no such word.

I interpreted that comment as an attempt at humour.

Aren’t they called centers now? as in the Alexander Maconochie Centre.

Why pick on Queanbeyan? Why not Murray Bridge?
If the world was the shape of a bullock, Murray Bridge would be under its tail…

@#3 – Pretty much any English dictionary will take issue with that statement. But ten points for your pronunciation. Many perps sent to the ‘gay [h]ole’ might think twice about becoming recidivists.

Glad he was caught before he killed somebody. I hope they crush his car into a cube.
