Another take on the ANU v. UC debate

A Live Journaler (The Uncool Club) has a detailed analysis on why they think UC is better than ANU.

If our friend didn’t think the ANU, founded in 1946, was over 70 years old then I’d be less inclined to think this was the plaintive bleating of the inadequate.

Kerces – Well, not wanting to go into too much detail (as he is still currently lecturing this semester), it’s the faculty that’s mentioned by Evictor. Last I heard, he was having a hard time finding someone who was actually responsible for sorting out his pay.

Rossco — which faculty?

I’m at UC and ANU as well as our live journaler (also studying French at ANU) and reasonably happy with this arrangement as it lets me study exactly what I want while staying near friends and family. The alternative was going to Newcastle. I like both campuses although must admit I only know my way around one tiny bit of ANU. The only complaint would have to be the amount of bureaucracy I have to go through, on both ends, to be able to study at ANU. Especially this year when they decided not to allow any more cross-institutional students (as per my rant here in Feb some time).
K

Both institutions produce a lot of ignorant wankers.

I went to the ANU. Why? They had the course I wanted. That’s all.

In 1999 as a postgrad at ANU (having transferred from ADFA) I found the hallowed halls a bureaucratic shambles with academics desperately scrabbling for what few perks (forget tenure and overseas confests) were still operating. My supervisor, who had transferred from James Cook, and for whom I had abandoned ADFA (since he had been my undergrad lecturer) was offered a year at UHawaii, bought me lunch and said goodbye. I had to finish in 12 months fulltime (having struggled with APSfulltime/study part-time for three years) and made the BAD decision to transfer to English (or whatever they call themselves now) where I fell foul of Post-Colonial theorists (and in particular a nasty type called with a Latin name, another insecure academic) who reviled my thesis and suggested I start all over again. I had had a book offer contingent on getting the thesis through, and ANU stuffed it for me. I went back into the APS and now have only the deepest contempt for academics in all shapes, sizes, colours and political ideologies. A postgrad student colleague (who was sleeping with her supervisor) got passed.

I spent 4 years at UC and not once did I, or anyone I knew, become aware of any ANU vs UC rivalry.

Sorry about the bolding, I thought it was a line break:(

I went to the ANU, and my wife is currently studying at UC, and while she mostly enjoys it, there’s been two instances where they’ve gotten her final grades wrong (not off by a couple of marks – giving her a Pass instead of a Distinction, for instance). Has this happened to anyone else? (It never happened to me, but that’s probably down to good luck rather than good management)

My brother is also lecturing part-time at UC in the faculty that has received a lot of attention at Riotact, and he hasn’t been paid for the entire semester (at least he hadn’t been paid last week when I talked to him last). Needless to say, he won’t be returning for the second semester.

love to see how prestigious UC will be when they drop their school of law within the next two years.

My daughter went to UC. She didn’t want to go to ANU because she reckoned they were all “up themselves”. ( She just started a pHD at the University of NSW ).
