Having taken a gig at the University of Canberra it seemed unlikely Capitals coach Carrie Graf was going anywhere.

This morning Basketball ACT are making known the deal is done:

In a coup for the Women’s National Basketball League, legendary coach Carrie Graf has signed a new deal with The Tradies Canberra Capitals – keeping her with the club for the next three seasons.

Graf – who has coached the team since 2005 and led them to six championship titles – will stay in Canberra full-time, coaching the Capitals in addition to her new role as coach-in-residence at the University of Canberra.

Local organisations and long-time supporters of women’s basketball, ActewAGL and ACTEW Water, once again played a crucial role in securing Grafs future with the Capitals through financial support.

ActewAGL Chief Executive Officer Michael Costello said he was thrilled to extend ActewAGL’s partnership with Graf and help keep her in Canberra for another three years.

Lets just hope the Caps will do better in coming seasons. And hopefully Lauren Jackson will finally make it on court.

Don’t get me wrong, I think this is a fantastic team and great for Canberra. Graf is probably worth every cent she gets paid.

But should I have to contribute to her salary through my (regulated = forced) Electricity, Gas and Water bills? I’d prefer if she was paid through gate receipts, food and beverage sales and merchandise.

I would like to see ActewAGL modify their accounts to show the actual cost of supplying their services to us and then show the Canberra Capitals, ACT Brumbies, Canberra Raiders etc. sponsorship expressed as a more palatable levy, tacked on.
It would make us feel “part of the team” and we are all about social inclusion these days aren’t we?
It would also help maintain the rage against the largesse of the ActewAGL franchise owners and their private corporate box concessions.

A fit Lauren Jackson is a coup. Carrie Graf is not a coup. IMHO.
