Anti-Islam pamphlet concern

The Canberra Times published an article about anti-Islam pamphlets that were distributed in Queanbeyan.

I also received one in my mail box in Braddon. My first thought was that the person that delivered it didn’t identify themselves on the pamphlet, so they must have known that what they were doing was wrong…but is it illegal?

On phoning Ms. Brodtmann’s office and enquiring what did this mean I was informed that the change in wording was “required because the previous wording may have offended some people” but the person I spoke to refused to name any particular group of people, and when I suggested “Muslims?”, she refused to discuss it further. ….. If what Brodtmann’s office says is true then there must be a lot more Muslims in the electorate than I thought and without even trying they are dismantling the Christian values that Australia was founded on.

It may have been done to appease JW’s or Jews, it’s not just the muslims who don’t celebrate Christmas. To assume that it’s just because of Muslims based soley on a refusal to answer the question is just stupid, especially as they refused to answer you before you mentioned muslims.
It’s probably more likely her own beliefs rather than pressure from any other group.

Then why don’t YOU phone her and ask her exactly why she has changed the status-quo? Don’t forget to post the results of your enquiry for us all to see.
BTW, I know a few JWs and Jews and while they don’t celebrate Christmas they are totally comfortable and tolereant with those of us who do.

I know several Muslems, and none of them have every had a problem with the concept of Christmas. In fact, the only time I have never ever heard first hand someone complain about a religious celebration being in appropriate because not everyone it of that religion. If they did, I would ignore them.

What I have heard many times, is outraged complaint when someone fails to celebrate a religious holiday without properly referencing the religious history of the occasion. Personally, I am offended that all Christmas cards do not acknowledge the pagan winter solstice rituals,

If you read the whole cartoon, which is easily available online as posted in other comments here, it is clear that it is not offensive and, even if it was so what! The best said so far is a muslim community rep reported in the Kangaroo Times as saying we live in a democratic society with a diversity of opinions. Basically he left it at that.

The trouble with types like birch and her discrimination commissioner that crawl out of the compost on these occasions are that they are behind the game and have really nothing to offer other than the usual grandstanding and waste of taxpayer funds. The community is doing just fine without them.

If you don’t like what you read after someone drops a pamphlet in your letterbox then, just like a copy of Watchtower or Myers sales catalogue, toss it in the (recycle) bin. You’ll achieve just as much.

The day we don’t have pamphlets is far more serious than having the odd one or two we don’t agree with.

Lucky the “few” you know are apparently spokesmen for their entire religion and you have their consent. Ill try to find the phone number for the guy that speaks for Muslims and Hindus and pass it on to you.

I recently received an anti-religious, offensive, unsolicited publication in my mailbox from Gai Brodtmann, MP for Canberra, namely a card with the wording “Wishing you and your family a safe and happy festive season”.
The previous MP for Canberra used to send a traditional Christmas card with Merry Christmas etc.
On phoning Ms. Brodtmann’s office and enquiring what did this mean I was informed that the change in wording was “required because the previous wording may have offended some people” but the person I spoke to refused to name any particular group of people, and when I suggested “Muslims?”, she refused to discuss it further. Well, their plan to not to offend some people has failed because they have offended me. For goodness sake, how far must this PC bullshit go or is this just a smokescreen for a more far-reaching agenda?
Even our Prime Minister, a declared athiest, sends out traditional Christmas cards not caring if anyone calls her a hypocrite.
If what Brodtmann’s office says is true then there must be a lot more Muslims in the electorate than I thought and without even trying they are dismantling the Christian values that Australia was founded on. I not receptive to swap Christmas for Ramadan just yet but I can see it is going to happen thanks to the actions of “elected” MPs like Ms. Brodtmann.

I agree!

She should have sent out “Happy Kwanzaa” cards.

A Festivus for the rest of us.

Hmm. Thumbs up for changing the wording, thumbs down for their piss weak explanation.

You’re a Christian?

I thought Christians valued tolerance, inclusiveness and turning the other cheek. Turns out I was wrong, apparently ‘Christian values’ revolve around acting like a jerkward.

Your right it is more far reaching agenda. Its part of a huge plot to take over Australia and its first steps are obviously going to be a slight change in wording in a pamphlet from a local pollie. How dare she wish you sa safe and happy festive season! That obviously goes against Christian values. They would never want you to have a safe and happy festive season.

Not necessarily inaccurate, but it is lazy.

Oh man, I remember when I was younger my insane grandmother used to have Chick comics around her house. They are a special breed of nuts.

First those Scientology booklets and now this? When are we going to get some religious propaganda that isn’t overtly creepy?

And this differs how exactly? Hate is hate.

Hate? Maybe. But it isn’t discrimination if I hate everyone.

! A rational comment! Congratulations for upping the tone of the thread, but you should probably hide before the lynch mob finds you :/

Brings to mind the (attributed to) Clemens quote; “Religion was invented when the first conman met the first fool”.

I’m sure there are anti Christian and anti Jewish and anti Buddhist and anti Vulcan and anti Scientology cartoons out there that don’t make the front pages of a newspaper.

There aren’t many things out there that can compel otherwise good people to commit horrific atrocities.

So you heard some of the carol singing at the Christmas service at St Cecilia’s then? Atrocious would be too kind a word. Jesus would have worn an iPod.

(Church name altered to protect the guilty.)

The Chick tract says that Islam teaches and encourages violence.

Then most of the commentary on RiotACT blames religion in general for violence.

OK. It sounds funny, and it might be, to a sophisticated audience. The extract and article in today’s Canberra Times pointed to something trying to build ignorance and contempt with (!) a message of conversion to Christianity. And that’s really dangerous.
Let’s assume for the moment that it’s not from the Muslims, or the Hindus or the Buddhists or the Jews. And it’s probably safe to scratch the Christian mainstream – Catholics, Anglicans, Uniting – because they tend to do tolerance to some degree. Ignoring a sane but tiny fringe (Quakers, Unitarians) who don’t do this kind of stuff to anyone even if they could afford to, one is left with the happy clappies inspired from the less-educated bits of the USA. You know, the mob that seeks to exorcise this city of sin from Mt Ainslie, the mob related to the Sydney till-on-the-hill at Hillsong etc. So, do any of them want to put their hands up and admit responsibility? Or put their hands up to condemn this kind of hysterical hate-mongering?

Not sure on the legality side, but also in Braddon, we received a Chick Publications comic, however it was a general ‘turn to Christ and ask His forgiveness’ type one. “The Sissy” or something like that was the title. Still struck me as a bit over the top though! And like the others, the deliverer had not identified themselves.
