ANU confirms the bleeding obvious. As above so below

The Australian National University has announced that the troubled Hayabusa space mission has managed to confirm “an indisputable link between the asteroids we see in space and meteorites that we collect on land”.

While I realise it’s good to confirm that which is suspected; this seems like a lot of trouble to go to.

Much more interesting is news that the Itokawa asteroid was only a comparatively young 10 million years old.

Just because you lot have philistinic tendencies doesn’t mean we all do. Some of us, (possibly we could class ourselves as the thinking ones), appreciate the contribution that science makes to our overall well-being, even if the links are often tenuous at best.

Sure, live in your commercial TV world of plasma screens, sad mall environments and pasty club existences, and we, the chosen ones, whose brain cell count exceeds four, will continue to marvel at the unknown and respect those who push our knowledge ever outward, even though we may not always know quite why.

Sadly, I think he may be serious.

Better than CIT/UC, which does NO research!

Let’s be fair, University of Canberra does do research. It wasn’t founded as a research institution and isn’t widely known for it, but none the less they do do it. And some of the tangible results of that is the (believed to be) ground breaking fish rocks being used at the new Cotter Dam to protect endangered species as the water rises.

Better than CIT/UC, which does NO research!

The University of East Bumcrack shines again with another earth-shattering scientific finding. I’m going to enrol, get my huge research grant and bring out a paper saying that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west.

ANU, let us spend a s***load of money proving something that everyone already knows. Who cares that our students have to wait a week to get an appointment with the doctor on campus or 3 weeks to get a councelling service? Or that homeless students are now living on campus because they can’t afford housing. ANU, top research university in the country, bottom for student services.
