Friends at the ANU have told me that the entire campus is being evacuated following a large explosion in the Research School of Chemistry. No casuaties reported as yet and the campus evac would seem to be precautionary as opposed to there being a threat of any sort.

Should be hitting the local news soon I would expect.

UPDATED: Thanks to TAD for the link, the ABC have the story up here. Mighty big boom by the sound of it.

FURTHER UPDATE: The Canberra Times has coverage here.

ANU security declared the campus closed soon afterwards and sent all students and staff home for the afternoon.

Friday afternoon at ANU? All two of them then?

Lets see here. OK. Six drops of essence of terror. Five drops of sinister sauce…..

It hit the ABC website (Chemistry Lab I’m led to believe)

EXPLOSION HITS UNI SCIENCE LAB
A laboratory explosion blew out three windows and sparked a fire at the Australian National University’s (ANU) science building this afternoon.

The fire is understood to have burned through the roof of the building.

It is not clear what caused the explosion, which hit the third floor of the science building at 1:45pm AEST.

Ambulance officers assessed four people from nearby buildings but they did not need treatment.

The fire brigade says smoke from the blaze was non-toxic.

Investigations into the cause are under way, as the clean-up continues.

I half heard this on the jjj 3pm news on the way back from Sydney (but had got it in my head it was the UC building).

k

Chifley Library has definately been evacuated as well.

According to the emails I have been receiving, only one section of the campus (near the Research School of Chemistry) has been evacuated.
