The Federal Government just announced that it is funding a new Australian Centre for Indonesia Studies that will be based in Monash University.

While the main centre will be at Monash, “nodes” will positioned at the University of Melbourne, CSIRO, and at the ANU.

ANU Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Young AO said ANU academics will provide invaluable expertise on issues of mutual interest to the two nations.

“The Australian National University welcomes the announcement of the Australian Centre for Indonesia Studies. ANU has a long history of the study of Indonesia and collaboration in the region.

“ANU will bring to the Centre its strengths in areas such as the politics, language, society and economy of Indonesia. Developing closer ties and a deeper understanding between Australia and Indonesia is critical to both countries,” he said.

I see the Mad Monk’s intending to make it harder for Australians to protest the Indonesian occupation of West Papua and to support its independence. He hasn’t said exactly how he plans to do that yet. Nice.

I don’t hear any Australians protesting that occupation and its accompanying genocide – they’re all too busy considering really important stuff like gay marriage and Dannii Minogue having a cry.

Better late than never, we’re quite ignorant of each others cultural and economical potential even though we live next to each other.

Indonesia will be one of the largest economies in the world by 2050.

Looking forward to Alexander Downer’s appointment to a personal chair of Shadow Plays.

well, democratic all this millenia, maybe that’s why we need a school?

I don’t see the West Papuans getting much democracy, and if you think the actions of the Indonesian military following the independence vote in East Timor were in any way incompatible with my description, I’d like to know how.

Democracy does not mean guaranteed sweetness and light to all (just ask our indigenous people being murdered in police cells and chalked up as “suicide”).

But since 1999 there’s been a massive decentralisation and democratisation.

If you don’t know that then best do some study before holding forth publicly.

This proves Rudd/Gillard did not have a monopoly on batsh$t crazy, pointless spending.
