ANU sliding?

The Canberra Times brings word that ANU is falling down on its beloved world rankings.

The largest university in the nation’s capital dropped three places on the coveted QS World University rankings.

ANU was placed at No20 this week, its lowest since being included on the list, but it remains the highest-ranked university in Australia.

The university’s vice-chancellor, Professor Ian Chubb, has in the past used ANU’s strong rankings to argue for better funding.

But a decline started in 2009 when ANU fell from 16th to 17th.

ANU’s acting vice-chancellor, Professor Lawrence Cram, said yesterday a university could not be boiled down to a raw data score.

You win some, you lose some.

Damn!

I put an “a” in that sentence when there was no need for one.

My high horse has just fallen in a ditch!

See, we all make mistakes while typing on the internet! It’s inevitable. It’s not the same as writing a paper or an essay. Anyway, we’re getting way off track here. Let’s go back to finding negative qualities about ANU to make UC feel better.

as if you’re grammar matters when your on the internet

I need say no more.

and the possesive of course.

With the exception of the possessive for pronoun “it”.

“It’s” should only be used a contraction of “it is”. For instance:

It’s a laughable how bad Drzais’ grammar is

Ok genius, I was clearly being ironic in order to make a pun at my previous mistake. Didn’t you see the smiley face!?! Geez, you people need to get a sense of humour!!

Apostrophes are also used to indicate possession, for instance:

Unfortunately, Drzaius’ ANU degree did nothing to improve his grammar

Apostrophes are used when you are making contractions or when you are bring two words together where you replace the missing letters with an apostrophe. For instance the sentence:

You will not regret studying for a PhD at ANU

becomes:

You’ll not regret studying for a PhD at ANU

or:

You all wish that you had got one of dem techno-fangled degrees at UC like me.

becomes:

Y’all wish you’d got one of dem techno-fangled degrees at UC like me.

and the possesive of course.

Doh, that’s what happens when you write while pissing yourself laughing. Honestly though, as if you’re grammar matters when your on the internet. 🙂

Thank God they kept you home for the year 3 NAPLAN test Drzaius, you’d have brought the whole of the ACT down with that grammar.

You’re right in saying that grammar on the internet is not the most important thing in the world, but when you’re comparing your education to another person(s) and arguing that yours is superior, it’s usually best to demonstrate some level of competence in communicating your argument. Otherwise you just look like a fool.

Perhaps it’s time for you to head back to the ANU and in between undertaking a remedial grammar course, you could ask for your money back on that very expensive piece of paper that they appear to have given you without the education to go with it.

And while it’s possible you could be just trolling with your atrocious grammar, I suspect that there’s not quite enough up top for that, if you can’t come up with a better argument than ‘Oh, I was laughing so hard that I used the wrong word’.

Honestly, if you COULD go to ANU, why would you go to UC?

Um, because ANU didn’t offer what I wanted to do.

And, unlike you, I can spell.

I did mention that some people at UC are there because ANU doesn’t offer their degree. Graphic Design, Nursing and Teaching just to name a few.

Where did UC place? Oh that’s right, they only measure good universities..

CCAE didn’t place anywhere near the top 200. It isn’t a proper university in any case.

BAHAHA! It’s so true! UC doesn’t even register on the QS Top Universities site; it’s clearly not a real university. See for yourself. UC’s not even included on the list of universities in Australia! BAHAHA!

I think anybody defending UC is annoyed deep down that either they weren’t good enough to get into ANU or ANU doesn’t teach they’re degree. Honestly, if you COULD go to ANU, why would you go to UC?

Well for starters people who go to UC know when to use ‘they’re and their’.

There are a few dire predictions floating around about the sustainability of the international student market, I know that some of it is just scare tactics by the unis to try and get the govt to write the policy they want, however not all of it is. Anecdotally, I have talked to a lot of international students this year who have expressed concern about how legislation changes have affected their chances of getting PR – something which will be detering new students, India and China are rapidly expanding their tertiary education sector and so on…. ANU needs to hold on to its world rankings because if the pool of international students shrinks, ANU needs to keep its pulling power and ability to have first pick of everyone.

Jeez people. You’ve got one of the best universities IN THE WORLD just down the road in this little old town and you’re STILL whinging?

The cat did it6:21 pm 09 Sep 10

ANU might get high rankings on the basis of its research, but it’s the overseas fee-paying undergrads that provide the income. Sounds like a bait-and-switch operation to me. How long before these undergrads realise they aren’t actually getting good value for their money, and choose to go elsewhere?

ANU’s high rankings are all for their higher level research.

Undergraduate degrees there are pretty poor in a lot of ways – enormous lectures, huge tutorials, lecturers away and not covered for, minimal personal attention to undergraduate students.

There must be a lot of variation between subjects. The only enormous lectures I ever had were first year stats.

anu graduate and ccae mba in progress (I’m ashamed to say) actually

The rankings are ridiculous; you boast about them when you can and tell the truth when you can’t.

The Chronicle of Higher Education had an interesting chart a week ago comparing six different rankings (though four are American only). There is not a single measure of quality that all of them agree on.

Sorry I don’t read that, I just leave it on the lawn to pollute my surroundings with the plastic.

Wow, talk about sour grapes.

You’d know all about grapes, having gone to a glorified agricultural college. 😛

Wow, talk about sour grapes. I KNOW that you were rejected from UC. If you bothered to have a fresh look at Belco, and by extension Bruce, you would KNOW that they are on the rise!

There was a discussion about this on RN’s Life Matters today:

http://www.abc.net.au/rn/lifematters/stories/2010/3006329.htm

It seems most of the drop is in a change in the way it’s measured. Oz Unis generally lost out because of a change in the weighting of student teacher ratios.

You win some, you lose some.

And when you lose them, you simply downplay of the rankings which you were previously so proud 🙂 The Libs were doing exactly the same thing when Labor was leading the 2PP votes (“2PP is not as relevant as first preference votes”), then not leading (“This 2PP result shows that Labor has lost the right to govern”) then leading again (“Are you still talking about that? It’s not important”). Of course, Labor were saying much the same things, just in reverse.

I’m sure the ranking would climb again if people could just find their way around that bloody mess of a campus…

Man, that’s rich coming from someone who lives in Gungahlin 😉

16th – 20th. In the whole flipping world. Hardly worth getting all breathless over is it?

On a related topic, I’m sure the ranking would climb again if people could just find their way around that bloody mess of a campus…
