ANU still in the top 30

Vice Chancellor Young is celebrating ANU’s ongoing place at the top of the QS World University Rankings:

The QS World University Rankings 2013/2014 released this morning show that ANU remains among the top 30 universities in the world, ranked 27th globally.

While rankings are imperfect measures and jump around year-to-year (we ranked 24th in 2012 and 26th in 2011), they do provide some comparison with our international peers.

In this latest ranking, we are placed alongside IARU partners University of California, Berkeley, the National University of Singapore and University of Tokyo, as well as the University of Hong Kong and Ecole normale supérieure, Paris.

This is an outcome of which we can all be proud, and a reflection of the commitment and quality of ANU staff and students.

Do we really think ANU is still what it once was?

A lot of the faculties are going to crap it would seem with more and more courses designed to just get the money in the door. There are some very flaky lecturers and courses, and this will have a deleterious effect on the research areas (which is what the rankings are based on) in a short while.

Oxford, Harvard, MIT, ANU? Don’t think so.

In other good news for the ACT, UC has entered the same rankings for the first time: http://www.topuniversities.com/node/9602/ranking-details/world-university-rankings/2013

No surprise really, given the intense effort put in by Parker to raise the research output of the academics, their increased research funding and markedly improved teaching performance (rated higher than ANU in most of the recent good universities guide ratings).

One can only hope that the ACT Government will invest more in UC – would be great to have two world-class institutions in Canberra!
