Any decent opthamologists in Canberra?

I’m desperately looking for a good opthamologist in Canberra.

Now I’m sure there are many of you who can recommend a lovely, friendly opthamologist who did your cataract or laser eye surgery. Unfortunately, these kind of recommendations won’t help me.

Opthamologists are usually very nice to people who need quick, simple surgeries which make them lots of money. Patients who they can then say goodbye to forever!

If you have a painful eye condition like mine, that is likely chronic or long term and doesn’t involve easy money for the opthamologist then it is extremely difficult to find anyone that will even take you on as a regular patient – let alone that is actually good at their job, friendly etc.

I have been to see a couple of opthamologists at the Canberra Eye Hospital – they were rude, dismissive and it was a complete waste of my time and money. They did not take the time to give me a proper diagnosis, and made it clear they didn’t want me as a patient.

I’ve seen a few optometrists about my condition but although some seem to really want to help, they just don’t seem to be empowered to do so, eg can’t write many prescriptions etc.

If you are wondering it seems I have some sort of chronic inflammatory or dry eye disease which gives me corneal ulcers and has lead to damage/scarring to the surface of my eye. If you have ever had a corneal ulcer or abrasion etc you would know that this is extremely painful, can make it difficult to keep your eyes open, work etc. In the long term, the scarring will damage my eyes.

These types of conditions do have treatments but because they are often chronic or time consuming to treat opthamologists don’t want to waste their time. Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated.

I chanced on this while looking for my ophthalmologist’s phone number. Of those mentioned in the various comments, I have seen three over the years. Not changing doctors but being referred to another with specialised equipment and moving to another when one retired. Although none of us not trained in an area are competent to judge the professional performance of someone who is so trained, my impression over the years has been that all three were/are very competent, very experienced and very professional … as well as very over-worked. The last arises from the fact that Canberra now has an ageing population and fewer ophthalmologists than it had when the population was (approximately) half its current size. As most specialists would rather be capital cities where they can make the same salaries (if not more) – after so many years of education and training – at the same time being less over-worked, we should be thankful for the good ones we are able to attract and retain in Canberra.

Just revisiting this because I’ve been looking into ‘Personal Eyes’ in Kingston and wondered if anyone had any experience of the place – good or bad – that might help me in making a frankly terrifying decision to get my eyes sorted once and for all….grateful for any updated thoughts!

i saw an ophthalmologist once, but they were exceedingly negligent and so i never saw them again 🙂

Dixon at Campbell Shops is professional, friendly and well worth seeing. He’s off work for a bit now following a cycle accident, but give them a ring.

As an aside, if you’ve managed to piss off all the specialists at Canberra Hospital are you sure the problem isn’t you in some way? Just wondering is all…

In a specialised field like Ophthalmology you can’t just pick and choose as they consider it “unethical” to shop around so you may have already done your dash with the others at the Eye Hospital. They keep the files for eons! Saying you didn’t like their bedside manner won’t wash and they will let you know they are not amused. 🙂

“Keep your files for eons!” If you request your file, how can they refuse to provide it? They don’t own it by law. Regardless of their attitude they don’t own your medical information.

Actually by law, medical records are property of the medical prcatitioner/ hospital. They have evry right to withold them and I think you will fgind that 99% of medical practitioners will only release patient record to another medical practitioner one they have recieved written consent from the patient..

Try Dr. Walker at Calvary Hospital at Deakin, I think it’s called Canberra Cataract Centre but he’s one of the most senior opthamologists in Canberra and does a broad range of stuff. He’s outstanding.

Sad to report that Dr. Walker has now retired. Had a very helpful conversation with Dr. Tridgell’s assistant today, who advised that Dr. Dickson in Campbell and the Canberra Eye Hospital in Symonston are currently taking on new patients.

I believe both Plushke’s have recently retired. My wife was seeing Walter and she was told both him and his brother had retired, and she would need to find a new specialist.

Thanks for the replies I did try Dr Tridgell a while ago and he wasn’t taking new patients. Would be nice if he actually let gps know this so patients do not waste time and money getting referrals they can’t use.

You are right they gave me that exact attitude. The second doctor I saw there actually threw a complete fit at me, as in standing up and shouting and pacing around angrily venting his frustration about all us troublesome patients and making it clear I should never come back there. With the door open to entertain everyone waiting outside.

I don’t know why they feel it is wrong for a patient to want to choose their doctor or get another opinion, yet at the same time expect that the doctor should have the right to dump patients they don’t like.

I would recommend Dr Dixon at Campbell.

Depending on what the issue with your eyes are a therapeutically endorsed Optom (one who can Rx drugs) might help.
There are bound to be some in Canberra now so would be worth asking around.

If you really need to see an Opthal then David Tridgell in Civic has an excellent reputation Px care.
Problem is he’s so good he may not be taking any new ones now 🙁
If so it might be worth talking to one of the Optoms to see if they can put a good word in for you so he will take you on.

As a sideline his brother Andrew is a leader in the Linux community with many significant geek achievements including writing the Samba file system.

Walter Plushke at O’Connor is the best I have been seeing him for over 30 years. I have been to others but Walter is the best. He is hard to get into and always a long wait in his surgery but all his patients swear by him. He can keep patients waiting because he is so thorough but I have never heard people complain as they know it is worth it.

According to the yellow pages (p 444) there are 5 Ophthalmologists at the Eye Hospital (Duncan, Dunlop, Khannah, Lawin and Saunders). There is D. Dickson at Campbell, M Pluschke at Ainslie and W Pluschke at O’Connor and D. Tridgell in Civic. With an ageing population you can wait months to get an appointment to see any of the above. Your Optometrist or GP will refer you to someone and prescribe drops or antibiotics or whatever while you wait to get in.

Maybe it’s because you’re not spelling it correctly – opHthaLmologist.

As for the substance of the question, I’m stumped.

I saw Dr Plushke at the Ainslie shops when I had an eye injury playing Rugby. He was very nice and seemed to know what he was doing.

Havent had your problem but have seen Dr David Tridgell on occasion and found him to be excellent. I believe it can be very hard to get in to see him though.
