Any good Snowplay this year?

Hi Gang

I have friends visiting from Perth who want some snowplay. Not skiing, just playing around with the kids. I’ve heard Corin is closed due to insufficient snow, but wondering whether anyone knows of anywhere we can go without having to go all the way to Perisher.

Help!

Simple as! But maybe there is a would be snow bunny reporter out there in RIOTACT land who would like to publish regular updates for us more anal retentive, plan in advance types?

Or just look at the hills

white = snow

Drive up mt ainslie and have a look?

How do you know when snow is in the ranges close by? Raised in the tropics, my nose for snow is less than ideal. I just can’t tell if there is snow about or if it is just the usual Canberra freeze. Any tips or suggestions from those who are more attuned to their environment?

Thanks for all the tips guys. Much appreciated.

Ironically, around this time last year Corin was closed due to too much snow!

The back way to Selwyn is quite nice, you go through Namadgi, and miss the big loop through Cooma.

You could head up to the Ginini carpark in the brindabellas, and then walk up to Gingera. I would not be surprised to find some snow especially on the south-facing spots.

No, but will watersports do?

There’s a decent amount of snow at Selwyn at the moment – they have reasonable (for a ski field, anyway) prices, and you can toboggan there – you can’t do that at the bigger ski resorts.

By this reprt, not looking good!

Just a few brief light showers in the Victorian resorts today. Over the last few days the resorts have had between 15 and 40 centimetres worth. Mt Buller has had about 40cm in total. A slight chance of light snow flurries for the southern-most resorts early on Friday morning.

Cold air temperatures and low humidities will follow from Thursday until Sunday morning, providing excellent snow-making weather.

Rain is next likely from Sunday, mainly at night as a slow-moving low crosses from the west and draws moisture from the north. The rain should steadily increase due to increasing moisture and the slowly approaching low but it looks like there will be some warming before the rain increases. This will cause some of the existing snow-cover to melt. Snow may not fall lower than 1600 metres until Wednesday due to the low and associated cold air moving only slowly. By the time that the coldest air arrives, most of the moisture will be heading across the Tasman.

LG, at this stage i think your best bet would be to hire a slushie machine, fill it with water rather than red slushie mix and tip the resulting product out on to your lawn.

Not only will your guests get to play in some snow, but they’ll also go away with some lovely idealistic & romantic notitions about canberra getting a white winter.

I would agree. Your two best bets for snow, while avoiding Perisher are:

Top of the Brindabellas. – to get there drive out to the cotter, but just before you get to the old cotter pub, turn right and follow Brindabella road to the top of the mountains. however, if there is a road closed sign, do not drive round it, as some times the cops will sit 2 bends further up the road. Also you will need to take chains.

Mt Selwyn ski field. In good years there is usually enough snow at the old Kiandra mining town for visitors to see snow, make a snow man, have a snow fight, etc, and avoid having to go through the national parks entry gates -$$$. You could then take them to the Thermal pool at Yarrangobilly. It would be advisable to still take chains here too.

Mt Selwyn is probably your next best bet, unless you get lucky and we have some falls up in the Brindabellas.
