ACT Policing is seeking the driver of a four door white or silver sedan which was involved in an incident in Kingston this afternoon (February 19).

Around 4.00pm a 20-year-old female was seen by witnesses to be running from the Kingston IGA onto the pedestrian crossing on Giles Street where she was hit by a vehicle.

The vehicle stopped and the female driver got out of the vehicle. By this time the 20-year-old female had continued down Trent Street towards Telopa Park. The driver returned to her vehicle and left the scene.

A witness called an Ambulance and the female pedestrian was taken to Canberra Hospital with minor injuries.

Police are urging the driver of the above vehicle and anyone who witnessed the incident and has further details to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers website on www.act.crimestoppers.com.au.

“So running on foot across a pedestrian crossing isnt a smart thing to do, but coasting across on your bike, is a-ok, even when you have an accident trying to avoid a pedestrian?”

Correct. When anyone on the road approaches an pedestrian crossing as long as the way is clear you can pass through the pedestrian crossing without stopping.

I live in this area and know the crossing well, so approached it quite slowly, but when suddenly a women is a few feet from you running at a sprint, it gives good cause for not running in the first place. Had I been on a motorbike or in a car I could have killed her.

Anyone who’s been to the crazy streets of south east asia understands that unpredictability is what can cause accidents. Just sprinting through a pedestrian crossing isn’t very predictable.

Wrong – cyclists must hop off their bikes before entering a pedestrian crossing. I was witness to a nasty accident just last week where a young teenager was riding her bike across a notoriously bad pedestrian crossing in Dickson when she was hit by an elderly man. Luckily she wasnt injured badly and only sustained a few cuts and some brusing. The elderly man will not be charged as she did not hop off her bike before crossing.

Oh dear, one last time HE WAS RIDING HIS BIKE DOWN THE ROAD, NOT ALONG A PEDESTRIAN CROSSING!!! THAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ACROSS AND ALONG!!

I think you will find that the poster was referring riding along the road, and therefore not being required to dismount at a crossing, same as cars are not required to dismount at crossings…

Kinda weird story in the OP. If I was the driver in such a situation, and the person I clipped ran off, I would probably assume that I hadn’t actually hit them (maybe just hit their bag or something?). I guess legally, you are supposed to call the cops and wait for them to attend, then tell them you hit someone, but that that person has since runoff?

What an odd incident. The girl that was hit by thr car kept walking down the road after being hit. Then a short time later a witness called an ambulance for the girl that was walking down the street after being hit by a car. Then there is the girl that was driving the car. She stopped after the accident, presumably to check the girl she’d just run over, and then the pedestrian just walked away without at least exchanging names and adresses!

I don’t have a lot of sympathy for the girl injured since she did run across the crossing. A few years ago, I was riding on giles st on my push bike and checked the pedestrian crossing and coasted through.

I’m fairly sure that running across any road isn’t the smart thing to do, crossing or otherwise.

How bad was she hit? It sounded like she was able to keep going after she got hit.

i narrowly avoided a taxi myself yesterday on the pedestrian crossing on the corner of cooyong and northborne. I (was walking) and had already taken 2 steps off the footpath onto the crossing and a taxi accelerated to get around me – only inches from clipping me. I only wish i had got the cab number plate, but was shocked at the time.

I don’t have a lot of sympathy for the girl injured since she did run across the crossing. A few years ago, I was riding on giles st on my push bike and checked the pedestrian crossing and coasted through.

Little did I know that a middle aged women took it upon herself to attempt to beat me and sprinted across the crossing. This caused me to lock the bike up and I went over the handle bars, I ended up with a broken thumb, and severely sprained wrist.

I’m fairly sure that running across any road isn’t the smart thing to do, crossing or otherwise. The Giles/Jardine intersection has a lot of traffic and two pedestrian crossings so I frequently see lots of near misses, usually by pedestrian’s who want to take a short cut or run crossing.

Shoplifter got a comeuppance?

ah yes. Sunday mornings eh?
