sticker

I normally bus it to work but have driven into the City everyday this week – Whilst paying for my parking this morning I noticed a yellow sticker informing me that parking will rise from $7 a day to $8 a day in the CIT carpark.

All day parking out the front of the Convention Centre will rise from $10.50 to $12 a day.

Anyone else notice their parking will be costing more after July 25 ???

This is correct. That is one reason why the word ‘ACTION’ doesnt appear on the tickets.

Time to bring in parl triangle pay parking, even at $6 a day.
And Fyshwick at $6 a day.
And Mitchell and Hume at $6.

It will create a little equity for those who use the facilities and not just punish city workers.

Create equity? If you get robbed, is it only fair for others to get robbed too? Eye for an eye is a moronic mentality.

As a former Parl triangle employee, I always thought there was some sort of madness in no pay parking there where there was pay parking everywhere else. (I also wonder why tradies never get booked for parking absolutely anywhere and everywhere around building sites, but that’s another argument for another day.)

Yes, there are no facilities within the PT, but bringing in pay parking there would reduce the number of vehicles within the area, encourage car pooling and the use of public transport and then give the workers who park within the triangle the opportunity to actually go out at lunch and be confident of getting a carpark.

FWIW, I cycle to the city the two days each week I don’t have kiddie drop offs/collections. I do my best to avoid paying the ACT or a private car park owner any more money than I need to….

Perhaps for $8.00 a day I expect better from a little yellow sticker. Not all upper case, use of a comma, and no incorrect apostrophe.

I guess getting it right is too much to ask in their rush to grab extra revenue from a piece of tarmac.

But why do the ticket machines not accept notes or credit cards? It’s 2011. The technology for this has been around for decades. Who carries $10.50 in change with them? Stupid.

If it costs $10.50 per day, that’s $52.50 each week for parking that you need in coins. Where exactly do you get $52 worth of coins each week? Seriously. Do they expect you to go to a bank once a week and make a withdrawal of 26 $2 coins?

The inside tip is to visit one of the carwash places (eg. Waves, Carlovers, etc.) and change your $50 note there. You can do it anytime, 24/7 and they always (for some unknown reason) insist in exchanging for coins.

When I used to need coins for parking I would just pop in to my local club and ask for $50 worth of dollar coins. They always have billions of the little suckers spare for the pokies so they don’t mind. It was a little (only a little) inconvenient…but do-able.

Why should office workers and retail staff in the city, Belco, Woden and Tuggeranong be the ones who pay parking. Why should tradies and retail staff in Phillip, Hume, Mitchell etc have free parking?

What makes them more special or exempt from having to pay for the privelage of parking?

There are office workers in Phillip, Hume and Mitchell too, not just tradies and retail staff. And I don’t think that the tradies and retail staff that work in these areas do in fact think they are more special than anyone else.

I would imagine that the parking being free in these areas has got a bit to do with some reasons mentioned by others above including that in these areas there are a lot of people that are just ducking in and out rather than there all day. These areas often tend to have limits of 2 or 3 hours too, particularly the off-street parking.

Also there is probably less general maintenance/upkeep required in these areas (less people, infrastructure, etc) so maybe less reason to get extra money to pay for maintenance services.

In these areas (Fyshwick too) the off-street parking spaces are usually owned by various businesses who I guess have decided that they don’t want to/can’t charge for parking. I would imagine there are government rules around setting up a pay parking system and I would imagine these businesses wouldn’t see a cent of the money it would earn even if they could set it up. I’m just guessing though…

And if you really don’t want to pay for parking then park your car in one of the areas with free parking and bus to where you need to go. There’s not a lot of point complaining about parking prices, they’ll keep going up because people will keep paying. The best thing you can do is tell them to jam it and park somewhere else. Not always a practical option, admittedly.

I agree with people about the change. Who carries that much in parking change? It’s remarkable theres no notes/credit card option on the machines.

How many public servants park in Fyshwick or Mitchell for 8hrs a day, everyday? How many do it in Civic? Theres your difference. Fyshwick might have a lot of businesses, but theyre much more spread out than the city and generally better planned. Most businesses/buildings in Fyshwick/Mitchell have their own carparks, in the city, theres a handful of carparks for a huge mass of buildings.

If youre going to choose to shop/work/play/live in the CBD, then its your own fault that you lose the benefits of quieter areas for parking and living.. no-one is forcing you to go into the city all day everyday.

I know there are cities using a similar bus ticketing system that have that option, but I think the costs to replace all the parking meters is probably too great at this stage in Canberra. Not sure if it will every happen here.

And you can buy your pre-paid parking tickets online too, though you have to allow time to have them mailed to you then. http://www.rego.act.gov.au/parking/parkingprepaid.htm# Their site appears to be having technical difficulties right now though.

Exactly right, and is also the reason why I got a parking ticket when I had a course at the convention centre.

Simple – go to the shopfront (and I think the website) and buy a ticket and you can pay by your credit card if you like – great if you are there everyday and you can get up to monthly in a hit (maybe more?). The only month it isn’t really worth it $$ wise is when easter and other holidays are in the same month.

I think you will find that the majority of on-street parking is limited to 1 or 2 hours, all of the off-street parking is provided for your use at no charge by the business that lease or own the properties that you park on.

How much does Katie Gallagher pay for her parking?

I used to work in Civic – I parked at the Hyatt for free, and either caught the bus over the lake (intertown buses pass the Hyatt every five or so minutes), or walk on the nicer days.

2 x bus fares using a ticket cost me under $5.00 a day, far cheaper than the parking in Civic. Didn’t have to carry change, and got a good bit of exercise on nice days.

As long as you were there by about 9am there’s no problems getting a park.

Yeah, but you’re usually just in and out there.

Jethro, I have it on the word of the Chief Minister’s office that we will have contactless credit card readers (visa paywave, mastercard paypass) put into new parking machines. There will also a system where the voucher has a serial number, which you can enter into a phone app which will not only remind you when your parking is up, but let you top up your parking payment from wherever you happen to be.
The way it works is that when the parking nazi starts writing your ticket, they have to put in the serial number of the latest lapsed voucher, and if you’ve topped it up, they will be blocked from issuing you a ticket.

Apparently this is happening before the end of the year. I will believe it when I see it.

I rarely have cause to park in Civic, but was annoyed recently when parking for the day on London circuit.

$10.50 for the day isn’t an absurd amount and I didn’t have a problem with the cost.

Hmmph, you can park at Jeff’s shed in Melbourne for $11/day if you arrive before 9am and leave after 3pm.

Meanwhile, parking in Fyshwick is free!
