Anyone know of a car for sale?

#2 daughter managed to rear-end someone recently. No-one was hurt, but her car’s been written off. It’s a damn shame – it was a mess cosmetically but it was mechanically superb. So we’re now in the market for a cheap (~$4.5k) reliable, economical car*.

Do any Rioters have, or know of, such a beast?

* Wanted: a dog that neither barks nor bites, eats glass and s***s diamonds. (Goethe)

[ED – let’s broaden this out to where’s the best place to find cheap second hand cars in Canberra]

😀 thanks again everyone. Daughter has bought a car.

Hi Deref, I was almost in your daughter’s position at 5.40 last night when the car in front of me came to a dead stop on the Parkes Way/Correnderk roundabout.

Apparently once they entered the roundabout from the left lane heading east, they suddenly realised they needed to go back the way they came.

So instead of going straight ahead and turning around at the Anzac Av roundabout 400m up the road, they stopped completely until no traffic was in the right lane and then they turned.

I think maybe reading your post reminded me of the need to leave a bit more space, so thank you!

Deref, I’m the Subaru from the first response and can be emailed at mscheeky_oz@hotmail.com

😀 Thanks again guys – emails have been sent.

You do not seem to understand the concept of physics.

Or do you drive a magical car that has zero braking distance?

Not normally, but when I am driving that magical car, I can safely drive right up behind the car in front, leaving zero braking distance.

You seem to not understand the concept of being a competent driver.

If someone just stops on a roundabout and a dash camera shows you were doing the correct thing and the person in front deliberately caused the crash, then they will be found at fault.

You would have to prove that the actions were deliberate where the intent was to cause a collision. That would generally only apply in a road rage situation where one was being brake-tested for example.Obviously the onus is on the driver following to maintain a safe distance thereby allowing sufficient time to react and avoid a collision.

Of course no one tailgates in the real world do they?

Bulls***. I can stop my car anytime I like. At no stage are you permitted to crash into me.

I remember Robbie (forgothisname) who pulled out into traffic on Hindmarsh Drive from Swinger Hill in the late ’80s – some dopey 19-year-old girl on P plates crashed into him. It wasn’t even a rear-ender and the judge found she had responsibility for the crash because an attentive driver would have avoided crashing into the other idiot. Her father was a cashed-up Greek who got really cranky about it too. Ha ha.

Irrelevant. If somebody stops, you don’t collide with them.

Even if the guy thought, “hey, I need a new rear bumper, and I’ve got one of those tail-gating P-plater 19-year-old girls behind me, I think I’ll just stop and she can pay for it”, then the nong is the 19-year-old public menace who drove into the back of him. What a nong.

My daughter recently had a rear ender where the nong in front STOPPED DEAD on the Drakeford/Isabella roundabout. She immediately thought ‘Scam’, which was only made more obvious when the driver started taking pics of the Front of his car. However, she is still ‘at fault’ according to the NRMA and, as P plater, is up for a large excess. My advice is to get a dashboard camera.

She “had a rear ender”? You mean, she “rear-ended a car”. She was either travelling too close, or she was distracted and not concentrating. You are ALWAYS at fault if you rear-end a car. What if the car in front had been stopped by an emergency? Braked hard to avoid hitting a child?

A dashboard camera wouldn’t make her any less ‘at fault’.

Perhaps better advice would be “always leave a safe distance between your car and the car in front”?

All the camera would do is prove your daughter was at fault. She was following too closely to the vehicle in front.

Yeah, this is really unfortunate. If someone has just stopped for no reason there really should be more questions asked. I guess they can claim “I saw a dog crossing the road” but in this case it’d still smell.

Of course you should always leave a gap, but there are situations where you could be acting properly and still get burned – ie: car changes lanes just ahead of you into your lane leaving an insufficient gap – you can start drop back, but if someone wanted to cause an accident for the purpose of insurance fraud, they’d have a window in which to slam on their breaks.

That it was on a roundabout is pretty damn sus too – it’s not a place where a car ever stops or even slows down normally. You can’t pull over on a roundabout, nobody will be crossing the road there and you’re not going to need to stop or slow down to leave the roundabout. The only times you’d slam on your breaks on a roundabout would be if someone had entered the roundabout without regard to oncoming traffic, or lost control ahead of you. Both of which would be obvious if they happened and would involve an additional party in the accident.

I just got a message from someone I know selling something that would match the description you provided. Check it out here:

Being in a similar position after my wagon was totalled last week, (Bloody Kangaroos – who said they’re not a menace?), I have spent some time going through the various car sale sites.

By far the best, (but knowing what I wanted), was Gumtree.

I will be checking out three prospects this weekend.

The other sites mentioned above seem difficult to navigate/specify your requirements.

Maybe a little bit more than your budget but I can vouch for it as a good car

Good luck finding one there that’s not already sold… the previous owner just “didn’t get a chance to take the ad down” in the last 5 weeks since they sold the car.

😀 Thanks again guys. Discussions are continuing on the home front – I should know what’s happening by tomorrow and I’ll contact you ASAP.

Hello,

I have a great little car for sale as I’ve just purchased a new one. It’s a 2000 Toyota Echo 3 door hatch. Very economic to run and really reliable. Regularly (and recently) serviced and registered until September. Asking price is $3,500. Let me know if you’d like to know more or come and have a look.

Have a great day 🙂

Hi,

I have an 95 BMW that I’m keen to get rid of. 2k?

http://www.carsales.com.au/

heaps of cars and you can narrow down the search to what you want (car brand/type, price etc)

Allclassifieds.com is my preferred source for finding second hand cars in Canberra.

In response to your specific question, I’m currently selling a 2002 Toyota Corolla 5-door hatch (manual transmission) for $4,200 (ad will be up on allclassifieds this weekend). In great condition except for a few small scratches on the side and rear bumper. Registered (in the ACT) until September. Let me know if you’re interested.

I do…..But not sure if it is what she’s after.
2004 BA Futura Wagon

As it happens, I have my brother’s car to sell, as he has moved overseas for a number of years. It’s a 2000 subaru forester wagon, and mechanically sound and cosmetically pretty good too, with a great stereo. My brother’s a bit of a pedant, so it’s well looked after. Available well within your price range. I don’t know if it’s much of a complication, but it’s got WA rego. If interested, let me know through these comments.

On the broader topic, I have always bought my cars privately. I’ve never owned a new car, but wouldn’t bother with sharks in car yards for a second hand one.
