It’s not a bad list.

But have they missed anything essential?

no where did i state that gloria jeans is a bad thing. i actually love a good mocha from gj’s. my point was that it’s not the way to sell a town. a ‘canberra insider’ should be mentioning the places that people from outta town don’t know. not telling them that we have the same things they have in their towns. where’s the incentive? the report i think gives people an insight into trying some things that only canberrans know about and love.

So drinking Coffee at Gloria Jeans and shopping in Canberra’s outlets is a bad thing? Thats the kind of pretentious attitude that I think gives Canberrans a bad name. As far as I’m concerned, the money is being spent in Canberra so its still beneficial to our economy. I’m sure Canberra shopping a major drawcard for our regional neighbours.

i think its a guide. and a good one at that.

its suggestions that ring true for those who live in canberra and actually enjoy something a little out of the norm. if someone was selling canberra by touting mooseheads as a good hangout, what the hell would people think when they come and experience that hole of depravity? or if you were to say “come to canberra and hit up gloria jeans while exploring the shops that have other outlets everywhere” how is that selling us as unique and something that people should come visit?

its ignorant canberra pride in some of the posts above that actually damage the image of a great town.

“This seems to be students guide on how to be a pretentious wanker.”

Couldn’t agree more!! 😉

I don’t have anything against Tilley’s as a place to meet up and grab some food or coffee – but I don’t get the obsession with “camping out” there that so many people seem to have! There are HEAPS better things to spend the weekend doing….

This seems to be students guide on how to be a pretentious wanker.

The blogger clearly states that the Cheap Eat to be had at Chairman & Yip is the early bird special. $28.50 for two courses and a glass of wine is cheap in pretty much anyones language, but don’t let that get in the way of making a comment…

that may not be ‘expensive’, and it is certainly cheap for c&y, but i hardly rekkun it rates as ‘cheap’, especially when there are dozens of places – like sammy’s, etc – nearby where you could get quite a lot of food for a lot less than that… so i won’t let that get in the way of making a comment, esp when there was then almost no other places mentioned (and i rekkun wagamama’s is pretty awful for what it is and how much they charge you)

Like we’re going to tell tourists!

I think they said Wagamama was for the cheap eats – although I’d rather go to Sammy’s right next door. Although it looked to me like a list written by someone who hasn’t lived here for long and doesn’t really know what’s what here. Lots of gems worthy of a mention missing from that list, but I guess with a short word limit there’s only so much a writer can do.

I like the Canberra bashing comments against the story. It’s amazing just how much Australians love bashing Canberra. I think its a jealousy thing, everyone knows Canberra (as most national capitals) is amazingly propped up by huge levels of Federal Government. This is then reflected in higher levels of pay, education etc etc..

I think that the passionate way in which so many people ‘hate’ Canberra is probably one of the best things Canberra has going for it. In that it keeps people away. The fact that people think its boring keeps away the bogans and undesirables.

Their insider is simply an Arts student at ANU with dellusions of grandure:

Factor about 3.5 years living in Canberra, as some variant on a full time student in subject areas irrelevant to many areas of traditional employment, and you can go some way towards explaining some of the recommendations made. Especially the rather scathing analysis of Mooseheads.

On the whole, the article isn’t much better or worse than other Canberra commentaries I’ve seen.

chairman and yip? cheap eats?? someone is having a lend… not sure who these ‘insiders’ are – certainly neither backpacker-friendly nor living on any sort of realistic budget!
