Anzac Day Bus Services

Hi all. I have lived in Canberra for seven years now and as much as I love the place, I still find myself amazed at some government decisions. Every Anzac day, my mates and our wives would all meet in a major city (which is chosen in turn) for Anzac Day to have a re-union. The city chosen is usually where one of us lives, thus this Anzac Day, we will be here in Canberra.

Whilst doing some planning, I note that ACTION in their wisdom (I use the term loosely of course) have decided that there will only be a bus service to the AWM Dawn Service from the City Interchange and Westfield Belconnen . What are we at Gungahlin supposed to do? Walk? Catch a cab? Catch a bus the night prior and camp? ACTION is the only (alleged) provider of public transport services in the ACT, and they can’t even put on a couple of buses for an event of national significance, which is taking place in the nations capital….

Free buses go to the Rugby and the League – but not Anzac Day and although the rugby buses are chartered, it is still un-Australian for the government not to provide transport on Anzac Day. How are the old diggers who did the hard yards going to get to the AWM if they don’t drive? Likewise, if the diggers and general public want to stay in Civic to enjoy a couple of Anzac beers, they will have to catch a cab as the Gungahlin buses stop at 7.00pm.

I guess the answer is to drive and park in the city somewhere to catch the bus up to the AWM, then leave the car if you want to have a beer or two. What an example of being over charged to live here and then getting SFA in return.

I wouldn’t usually whinge about this type of thing, but enough is enough. If anyone in the government who can actually make a decision is reading this, how about the provision of a service on a very special day?

I’ve said enough…..

You could just do what most people do and drive. And really if it is a such a special day, why are you planning on wasting it by drinking so much you can’t drive? Or is it un-Australian to be sober on a national holiday?

Bus drivers get enough crap to deal with at the moment, why should they have to be at work before dawn to drive you somewhere so you can drink and party on with your mates. They might want to enjoy the public holiday as well!

Canberrans should be encouraged to view Anzac day as more than just a day off work. To this end, Action should run a regular timetable to rememberance services and clubs throughout the day. Moreover, surely each Digger who requires it could be provided with two cab vouchers so they can get to the War Memorial (and pub afterwards !) ?

Belray, I hope you and your mates enjoy your reunion

While I can’t find any mention of this year’s ANZAC Day services, it’s incorrect to say “they can’t even put on a couple of buses for an event of national significance”. They ARE putting buses on, just (maybe) not from Gungahlin.

But even if there was a bus, it would depart from Gungahlin Town Centre. You would still have to get to the Town Centre before the crack of early to catch it. So how would you get there – drive? In which case, why can’t you drive to Belconnen?

It is the same for diggers who live out southside. I know that some sports clubs do provide their own transport to and from the services for diggers, so check the clubs out at Gungers.

But it is beside the point, actgovco should be providing something more substantial, it seems they will only provide a “service” when it suits them not when the public of the ACT needs it. You could try emailing/phoning chiefly and his muppets to try and get some action but I feel you would be wasting your time – you would possibly get more action by going to the media and one of the shows such as A Current Affair or Today Tonight and blasting actgovco there, those shows love this sort of contoversy.
