Dawn Service
ANZAC Day traditionally begins with the Dawn Service at the Memorial, a reminder of the dawn landing on Gallipoli in 1915. The screeching of the cockatoos in the early morning chill gives a distinctive Canberra touch to this special day of remembrance.

5.30 am – 6.00 am

The Memorial’s Commemorative Area is open at the conclusion of the Dawn Service. Here the public may view the Tri-Service Guard mounted at the Tomb of the Unknown Australian Soldier. The Hall of Memory will be open from 6.00 am until 8.00 am, giving people the opportunity to lay a poppy on the tomb.

The Memorial will open after the National Ceremony. Here the public may view the Tri-Service Guard mounted at the Tomb of the Unknown Australian Soldier. You are invited to lay a single poppy at the Tomb of the Unknown Australian Soldier at the conclusion of the ceremony.

And if you happen to be at the City RSL then Mael and I will catch up and have a beer, or two, or three.

Mael and Thumpers ANZAC Day adventures…

Whilst forming up for the parade, I was cordially invited down to Olims for a post-ANZAC march quiet beer amongst ex-comrades in arms, and so Thumper and I headed down to Olims, which is only a short distance away from the war memorial.

We were quite amazed at the crowd that was there, the 2up was exceptionally run by 5 staff who were working the crowd, and maintained the game solidly until the time we departed, a good 5 hours later. (I assume they continued on too) The beer was cold, and the company ready and willing to part with their hard-earned cash, although I barely managed to scrape away with anything over paying for the beers we were drinking this year.

While we were there we were asked a few questions by a CT reporter whom we felt quite frankly should read the RiotACT a little more often, but other than that little incident, we had a very good time.

Less can be said about the City RSL however. A dingy box filled with 80’s décor would be ok if we were off our faces playing 2up, but once they closed the 2up it resumed being a dingy box filled with drunks. If there was ever a place in Civic that needs a facelift now, it’s the RSL. I’m sure their idea of adding colour to the pub is limited to installing poker machines. Unfortunately, the décor was the only thing out of the 80’s, with the price of beers being commensurate with anywhere else in Civic, and our patronage will be elsewhere next year. At first guess, we’ll probably be heading back to Olims.

To be honest, I think we walked away from Olims stunned. Their service was quite inspirational, and we were treated with respect and dignity as ex-members of the Defence Forces instead of the usual drunk-soldier on Anzac day apathy (the feeling I got from the staff at the RSL).

They also have wheat beer on tap at Olims, I recommend everybody try it at least once, it’s very good. I liked it so much I had several…

I went to the dawn service and i have to say the Last Post was played to fast. It didnt have those long drawn out notes and was just the wrong tempo. But anyway not much else to complain about.
