Anzac Parade to get a re-surfacing

The National Capital Authority are warning that from 12 November they’re going to be re-surfacing Anzac Parade.

So if, like me, you duck along it to avoid Civic then be aware there could be delays.

“The parade’s southbound lanes will be closed, with traffic redirected to the parade’s northbound lanes. The northbound lanes will be made two-way for the duration of stage one, and traffic slowed to accommodate the works.

The work is programmed to be conducted during the day, from 7am to 4pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 2pm on Saturday. Traffic will be redirected 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.”

Does anyone know if they really started work on ANZAC Pde today, and if so, how much was traffic flow affected?

This is a good move. Anzac Pde is one of the more popular tourist routes in Canberra and it is in poor condition. I just hope they do it properly and use proper hotmix and not cheapo loose stones with a thin spray on bitumen covering.

If you read the pdf fact sheets at http://www.nationalcapital.gov.au/enhancing_and_maintaining/anzac_parade_reconstruction.asp it will tell you it’s a full depth reconstruction.

I’m wondering about cycling space, with the current lanes there’s plenty of space to share. There’s a bad habit of forgetting about cyclists when they do road works.
Maybe the current GDE signs mean that’s changing?

It’s all done by contractors nowadays. Much cheaper and more efficient. Pity about pride in work though, well you can’t have everything.

Problem is, start any earlier and it hits Remembrance day. I suspect you’re right that they’ve factored some leeway into the schedule and there will be a triumphant press release crowing about how it was finished “ahead of schedule” 🙂

could ? I think you mean there will be 😉

From their release:
The National Capital Authority will undertake the first stage of work from 12 November 2008 to 24 April 2009, with the road on the southbound (east) lanes of Anzac Parade being replaced.

The parade’s southbound lanes will be closed, with traffic redirected to the parade’s northbound lanes. The northbound lanes will be made two-way for the duration of stage one, and traffic slowed to accommodate the works.

So, the scheduled resurfacing project of Anzac Parade has an end date of the day before Anzac Day?
Either there’s fat in their scheduling, or there’s a (hopefully slim) chance the Anzac Day march and dawn services will be affected.

It’s going to occur over a few years with each stage only taking place between Nov 11 and finishing in time for ANZAC day.
