Are shadows an OH&S risk now?

beware the shadows

These signs have sprung up around the entrances to the new building at 121 Marcus Clarke St lately, and they’ve got me a little confused.

All I can think is that either the building throws special shadows with enough mass to cause people to trip over, or there’s been a spate of people being followed very closely by strangers.

Are shadows a hazard now?

Because if they are, we’re going to need a lot more signs.

The have the opposite problem at a hotel in Vegas.

Damn – that’s equal parts scary and wildly funny… nice find!

i saw this when i was walking past (and laughed). Those steps a face exactly west (walk up the steps by heading east). Maybe that has something to do with it?

Well there was that episode of Dr Who where the shadows killed people…

Funny, so now programmers (with $$ in their eyes) are franticly writing add-on’s to all major architectural design programs which show every possible shadow configuration vs trafficable area vs public liability payout…….

If not, please book a place on either the three day or four day course.

Are there any places left on the yearly six hour refresher course?

…and is it held at a shadow proof location?

How long before we see the signs;

Have you done your mandatory “Stair Use” training yet?

If not, please book a place on either the three day or four day course.

Please do not attempt to climb stairs in this building if you have not been signed off by the Stairs supervisor as having done the training and been accredited.

Stairs inherently dangerous, management accept no responsibility for injury caused by incorrect use of stairs, use at your own risk.

SHADOWS MAY NOT BE WHAT THEY APPEAR TO BE. THIS IS A WARNING TO ALL STAFF!

Counseling sessions are available for those employees with stairs phobia, or any traumatic reaction caused by stairs.

False shadows being cast from the top step to the step below giving the impression that the step is closer to you than it is??

Around the back of the building maybe…but at the front, there are no steps at all…

Were they surprised to see that shadows are being created by the building? I’m imagining a meeting with the architects and the building owner, the owner outraged that nobody told them that this whole ‘shadowing’ phenomenom was occuring, and why didn’t anyone tell them that would happen?!

…is “shadowing” like “ghosting”? Ghosting is definately an OH&S issue…

Just don’t step on the cracks…

Especially people are sunbaking on their tummies…

Just don’t step on the cracks…

I recall once a long driveway at a caravan park where the owners had carefully built speed bumps exactly in the shadow cast by poplars in the late afternoon sun. Well signposted but almost impossible to see.

Clearly it’s the Vasta Narada!

On a related topic, bifocal glasses are a major trip hazard too – according to the health report on Radio National recently.
