Are the police in Canberra accountable?

It is my understanding that ACT Policing does not record a complaint unless they intend to actually do something about it.

Is there anyone out there who can either confirm or refute that please?

U will get over it – but then again I doubt it!

My advise to wonders, and maybe even yourself is that you could perhaps ask how the ACT is really run before starting to tell another that they are green

No, completely unaccountable. Not a single judicial, governmental or internal investigative mechanism present anywhere.

I tend to agree – money is being paid to gangs of old legaly drunk thugs that illegaly evict tenants while the Government turns a blind eye. Gives them all a job I guess.

Since commencing in December 1996, information gathered through ACT Crime Stoppers has resulted in: Rewards of almost $16,000

Bah hahahahahahahaha

I’m still amazed how anyone can reply to One. I’m a nutjob from way back and say dumb shit at times, but I’ve got a deer with no eye on this One.

How about reporting drug pushers anonymously, what number do you call then, I would like to know so I could inform more people to report a pusher.

Basically it works like this:

Call Police – Emergency 000, non-emergency 131 444, Crimestoppers 1800 333 000- talk to an operator – if your incident is minor in nature and a patrol will not attend you still get to report your incident and a job is created – get the job number. Should a patrol attend the incident will still be recorded and a job created.

Should you talk to some random Police officer on the side of the road and they make notes in their notebook – consider the event recorded even if a job on the computer system is not created.

Pretty much most interactions with Police are recorded in some fashion. Any incident/interaction with the public or action taken by the officer can be called into question and investigated with the officer made to account for their actions.

Hope this helps.

Thank the sweet baby Jeebus that’s out

The reason I asked about recording complaints of alleged crime is that we suffered years of smashed letter boxes with no police action to even make a record of most of the reports.

Then someone recently told me about a criminal trial that occurred last year(?) in the Supreme Court where a police officer apparently admitted under cross examination that there were no reports of alleged talking in the particular case because the police had taken no action. Apparently the defendant was trying to prove provocation and the alleged stalking would have assisted. Does anyone remember the case?

I really have no idea…all I can say is that I was gobsmacked when one got of his motorbike in full leathers and jackboots. One word: pornographic. 🙂

I was once told ‘i could make a record of this, but I’m not gonig to do anything about it, so it would be a waste of your time and mine’ when at the police station reporting property damage (smashed house window).

That’s pretty poor, really. Even property damage incidents which can’t be investigated should still be recorded (and most are).

Whereas in Queanbeyan, you can attend the station multiple times to report a neighbour stealing from your yard, and requesting the person be charged, and nothing is recorded, or any action taken.
By comparison, the ACT Police are diligent hardworking chaps.

yes, i know that buzz819, but not when you call them complaining that your back gate has been broken by vandals, and they tell you they don’t have enough resources to send out to investigate, and you then say ok. You need to ask for them to report it and they will then give it an incident number. If that is not done, there is no report made.

buzz819- The police usually ask “would you like to make a formal report”.

If you choose not to, then there is no formal record and no job number.

Umm… If they are sent to your house there is a job made with a reference number…

From my experience, you have to ask the police to provide a incident report reference number – this makes them record it. If you don’t do this, the likelyhood is the police won’t bother to record the complaint even if they make a the visit. My lousy, noisy neighbour was visited by the police on numerous occasions, with no police record made. They would sometimes come around for a “friendly” chat and that was that. No follow up, no nothing. Until the body corporate started to take it seriously (after several violent incidents and another neighbour having to take out an AVO on him).
Every time we rang the police to complain, we’d ask for a reference number… the police got sick of it but finally got the hint. Public Housing also finally got the message and started to get serious (as far as they could when dealing with someone they had no idea how to manage and no alternative housing options). Anyway, bottom line is … ask for the incident to be record by requesting a reference number.

Every single job the Police get sent to will create a Job number, every single one.

You attend the front office of a Police Station, talk to the Police, a Job number is made (if it is a Police matter) a car gets pulled over, Job number etc.

Are you talking about complaints against Police? Or just general complaints?
