Are we to believe Canberra's sports stars are islands of virtue in a sea of doping?

No less an instrument than the front page of the BBC website has taken up the issue of the Australian Crime Commission’s report into organised crime and drugs in sport.

The Australian Crime Commission (ACC) said scientists, coaches and support staff were involved in the provision of drugs across multiple sporting codes.

In some cases, the drugs were supplied by organised crime syndicates, it said.

Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare said the findings were “shocking and will disgust Australian sports fans”.

“Multiple athletes from a number of clubs in major Australian sporting codes are suspected of currently using or having previously used peptides, potentially constituting anti-doping rule violations,” Mr Clare said.

“It’s cheating but it’s worse than that, it’s cheating with the help of criminals.”

High profile sports people are all lining up to say they’ve never seen any of this doping.

Who to believe?

Certainly Canberra’s Lauren Jackson with her seemingly interminable injury recovery process can be considered an unlikely suspect.

Hopefully before too long names will be named rather than leaving all under a cloud.

I read the bit that Canberra teams get tested more than anybody because they’re so close to AIS, and they sometimes need to boost their testing figures so use the Raiders as an easy top-up.

Oops.

The bit that interested me in the report was the evidence of drug use filtering down to local and amateur sport, and for general recreational use in fitness.
Since I’ve been in Canberra I’ve seen a *lot* of bulked-up blokes walking round, there’s no way that’s natural physique even taking into account the fitness record of Canberrans.
I had a mate who got into this sort of thing about 10 years ago in the UK, he put on rapid muscle growth and it ended up sending him half-mad….wanton aggression, desperate need to be noticed, swaggering walk, always looking out for a fight he could get involved in.
It took him a long time to get off the stuff because it seems to be psychologically addictive (if not chemically), as well as the risk of long term health effects and damage to the heart and other organs.

The whole story is a distraction from the governments miss management of the country. The gov say it’s rife but they have no proof or arrested anybody. A rack piss vials turn out to be a 5 year old jar off piss.
Labour wrecked the country to suit themselves and now they are trying to save their skin at the expense of Australian sport. They also say crooked betting is rife but can only come up with one example and it’s probably the Ryan Tandy saga.

You should have probably used the word Juliar to support your thesis.

After seeing Jason Clare on Insiders this morning, I am inclined to agree with you on this.

If two Liberal Party fanboys think it then it must be true.

I haven’t been interested in any professional sport for many years. Not all games are rigged, but some are. Not all players are doped, but some are. And there’s enough of both to make it all a big yawn, whether it’s AFL, NRL, cycling or whatever.

If “have not been interested in years” why have you responded?

This is a public forum where people express their views, and the latest revelations simply appear to confirm what I’ve been thinking for the last 20 years or so, so I posted a comment reflecting that.

My point was that despite all the current expressions of horror, I don’t think that anybody should really be surprised that match fixing and drug use are relatively common in Australian sport.

There was a time when ‘injury’ meant, oh dear, if they test me I’m busted.

Not saying that this is the case here though.

And the thought of Canberra Raiders players taking drugs is as laughable as a player rooting a dog, or pissing on someone in a pub, or fleeing from the police after speeding…..

Oh wait….

The dog denies having sexual relations with that man…

Testing for Performance Enhancing Drugs is extremely poor in australia’s four football codes.

And testing is much better in cycling. But cycling has the bad reputation – because riders are actually caught!

Australia’s four football codes are scandals waiting to happen. Who will be Rugby League’s Lance Armstrong?

Some of these footballers even have muscles on their turds.

Well these two lads should be in the clear. There’s nothing here to suggest that they’ve ever made a poor decision…

I can see why the Canberra Times are losing customers. The photos on the front page are horrible.

Maybe the Cavalry should have picked up Canseco after all…

Pictures or it didn’t happen.

…oh, wait…

Shouldn’t that be “sea of dopes”?

I love the insane suggestion, by some TV news sources and newspapers, that the population will be shocked and turn their back on sports due to these incredible unforeseen revelations!!!

What? The hyper-testosteroned, over muscled, hyperactive, mean machines, they’ve turned into demigods, are not clean, natural, healthy living, vegetarians, health freaks, who just happen to be naturally gifted and blessed, and who cuddle puppies for an hour a day and train for the other 23?

Do they think all sports fans are, blind, deaf, dumb and under 12 yrs old?

One for the “No sh!t Sherlock” files.

No. No we are not.

Anyone who thinks professional Australian sport is drug-free and/or untouched by fixers has their heads in the clouds. As soon as the punt gets involved, so do the crooks.

It’s not just here, of course; the pattern is universal. It seems to be a peculiarly Australian response to think we’re clean and the rest of the world is dirty.
