Territory And Municipal Services have published their plans for the return of official Summernats activity to Northbourne Avenue.

The Summernats City Cruise of up to 200 vehicles will be held at midday on Thursday 5 January 2012.

The City Cruise will make its way from Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPIC) departing from the Summernats entrance near the old Shell service station site, Stirling Avenue, turning right onto the Federal Highway to travel along Northbourne Avenue into the City. Vehicles will then turn at the intersection with London Circuit and return back up Northbourne to EPIC.

The Federal Highway and Northbourne Avenue will be closed in sections as the Cruise passes meaning there will be a short disruptions for motorists, pedestrians and ACTION commuters.

Key points to note:

— All road rules will apply
— Cruise will travel at 40km/hr with a police escort
— Uniformed police presence along the route
— Alcohol ban in public areas along the Cruise route
— No viewing from the central median strip

The best vantage points to see the Cruise are in the City and at the Summernats entrance near the old Shell service station site, Stirling Avenue, and the Federal Highway. These locations are where the vehicles will be travelling at their slowest so people have more of a chance to see them.

There’s an FAQ and a brochure.

I think the City Cruise is a great initiative and I hope it is successful. I enjoyed many years of watching the Supercruise with my family and was disappointed to see it canned because of the actions of a violent group of spectators.

I do agree with comment #11 that more needs to be done to flush out Braddon on Friday/Saturday nights though. Best solution I can think of would be to block off the streets and only allow access to cars with Summernats entry stickers — those are the cars everyone wants to see.

Also a definite chance of a major reptoid landing.

(a minute chance, but just as definite)

Using risk management for a moment, the likelihood of reptoids landing is far lower, and the consequences unknown.

I hope you put that through the correct ISO 31000 processes.

Well, he is certifiable, if that is what you mean.

200 cars is not too bad – but why do it on Thursday?

Cars are stilll arriving on Thursday – and I will be surprised if the best 200 will be there ready to go at lunchtime ….

Could be a good way to focus minds and get them in!

Look summernats is a great festival for canberra. We have all loved cars at some point in our life. I’ll be more enthusiastic though when cars are finally banned from streets in regular hours. Since it was cars that made Canberra dead, it is appropriate that a big festival celebrates that culture now and into the carless future ahead.

Time to ship in a dozen or so Belgian or German water cannon. If you’ve ever seen them in action you’ll know they really are the best for making people slide along pavements/roads/grassed areas.

is this an attempt to flush them out of braddon? That’s become a madhouse. It used to be humorous but still reasonably pleasant to take the kids, set up on a corner and see the fully sick rice boi racers and bogan v8s and which one of them was brave enough to attempt a burnout. Now its nuts.

Landing strip……

In your opinion. If you knew what we did about the flotilla the reptoids have amassed, you wouldn’t be so flippant.

When they say “all road rules” do they include:
Registered?
Roadworthy?
Seatbelt use?

I assume that this is being held early on to discourage people from doing things to get kicked out before the event really starts.

This is a risk, I reckon. There’s the definite chance of another riot.

Last time there was a “riot” I was actually impressed by the boganic sense of irony (and timing!) when they all started chanting “angry mob, angry mob” in unison.

City pedestrians crossing northbourne will have to close their eyes to be sure not to view the cars from the median strip.

Yeah, righto. I’ll believe that when I see it.

That’s a bit rude, and silly, especially in the city part.

I guess they only have so many cops to keep it under control, so they want it to be as simple as possible.

If they are having a rolling stoppages approach, then at Dickson surely the northbound lanes would still be open to traffic while the Convoy is heading south, so you would be able to wander over onto the strip without much trouble.
