A 17-year-old Canberra youth will face the ACT Childrens Court today (Monday, August 8. ) charged with the murder and aggravated robbery of a 27-year-old man in Braddon on Thursday (August 4).

The young man, from Canberra’s north, was taken into custody late on Saturday night (August 6) after ACT Policing had negotiated his surrender.

Police had executed a search warrant on a Turner residence during the early hours of Saturday morning. During this lengthy search, evidence was located which will form part of the brief of evidence.

A machete and a baseball bat were located which police will allege were the weapons used in the attack.

Police are still searching for a second person in relation to the murder.

Any members of the public who have not yet spoken to police and who may be able to provide information which could assist the investigation are urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers website on www.act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.

I am seriously unsure whether to just laugh at this or run to the shops for a bag of popcorn! Where to start with this?!

If this is a serious post by turntabletreachery, what’s the betting he/she has a ‘2612’ tattoo?

I’ve been wondering what’s been going on with this one – I’m hoping the hate crime aspect of this one is actually exposed and discussed rather than being swept under the carpet. The boy’s parent’s attitudes to, and comments about, a certain broad ethnic group could do with an airing, especially as they belong to a notorious (alhtough dwindled) local sub-community.

It seems that you knew him. I am very sorry for your and his family/friends loss, of this young man especially over such senseless, mindless violence. I sincerely hope that justice is done and bring a small amount of closure for his family and friends. From what I hear in the media, the public helped greatly in progressing the investigation and commendation for that is well deserved.

I don’t think it is right that juveniles charged with serious crimes be dealt with by the childrens’ court and their identity protected. Its reasonable in my opinion to give children the benefit of the doubt for one or two petty crimes, but once they commit serious or repeated offences, I don’t believe their youth deserves any special treatment in the justice system. If they commit big boy crimes they deserve big boy punishment.

SO agree!

15. He’s mentally retarded (difficult to dispute seeing brainiac took his murder weapons home with him).

Great work by the ACT Police – early arrest and weapons found.

Now for the Judiciary………………………..and what are the odds of one of these, or all of them, coming up?

1. He was a great bloke
2. He was drunk and didn’t know what he was doing
3. He doesn’t drink………ever.
4. He has never, ever taken drugs
5. He was molested as child
6. He was a good catholic boy just out taking the dogma for a walk when this happened.
7. He was molested as a teen
8. He had that knife, gun, as he found them and was taking them down to hand them in
9. He was molested as an adult
10. Okay, so he took a joint once…………..but he didn’t inhale.
11. Hmmm…….okay, so he molests adults and teens…………..but only once
12. Okay, so there was this other time……………………..maybe more often than that then…..
13. He’s a great bloke though

14. “He’s got his whole life ahead of him” (to commit more violent crimes)

If he can aso claim mental health problems, and that daddy didn’t hug him enough, he’ll be given a bag of lollies and sent home.

Bastard! I have to pay for my bags of snakes.

I suppose we should be somewhat thankful for murderers who take their murder weapons home with them.

My money is on out in five years.

Well done to the ACT cop shop.

How come the (alleged) murderer isn’t name, just because he’s 17???

COMMIT ADULT CRIME, BE TREATED AS AN ADULT

F*** the “children and young people act” if the offender knew what he was doing, he should be treated like if he was just ONE year older

Looks as if this was purely opportunistic without any motive whatsoever. Seems as if anyone could have been the victim here. Also, I ask myself how a group of men on ice can wander down Northbourne loudly without anyone minding…

I feel the same way. It’s a little absurd to think that, had this happened perhaps 6 months later, he could be 18 and then charged as an adult. I really don’t think the difference in age here warrants him being tried as a minor.

Such a sad tale and a waste of life on two counts, it would seem.

Harryhailer I don’t disagree with the assumption. Thumper and Mr_Dee give us accurate, credible, eyewitness account’s of what can go on. Its good to raise the issue of ice, but everything is just speculation for now. What if’s. But, what if it was just alcohol that was involved. Is 4am still closing time. To single out just one drug and heap hatred on it would seem to be missing a larger issue. Alcohol related violence in Civic. But seeing as this is housing commission we make lots of assumptions.

I really hope that the murders, drug busts, meth heads, and assults all make it into the Northbourne Flats’ herritage listing. Where are the Greens on this? They love public housing.

Sigh, looks like we need to dig up Charles Bronson.

I don’t think it matters… There will always be ferals like them. I put them in line with the Polar Bear that mauled and killed a British teenager in Norway. You don’t try to reason with things like that, you just simply put them down for the safety of the rest of society.

The lesson here is don’t walk around Canberra after midnight, until the sun comes up. If you have to then have something to protect you with, even if it’s as simple as a capsicum spray.

I can’t help but wonder why this gentleman was discovered by two passers-by, apparently hours after the fact, rather than the residents whose flats appear to face directly onto the area where he was found. Are the residents too fearful to report such incidents? Or are they so accustomed to early morning fracas they didn’t hear anything out of the ordinary ? Either way, it’s a terrible situation to live in, especially given many wouldn’t have much choice in housing.

Another excellent job by the Police though. I’d bet these flats are a disproportionate drain on their resources

Exactly.

It’s scary to think that the situation ANYwhere in Canberra has got so bad that both the local community (neighbours) and Police (apparently, according to comments by locals) were resigned to accepting of this level of ‘Wild west’ behaviour.

It’s even more tragic that a completely-insane opportunistic murder ended up being the next phase…

Also, how sadly ironic that knowledge of the accepted level of lawlessness and crime in that area made rounding up the ‘usual suspects’ seemingly easy – leading to an easy arrest. Basically, it seems known law-breakers were given somewhat of a free reign there, and now have crossed the line of what level of illegal behaviour was ‘acceptable’ (I assume if they had of just kept to their ‘accepted’ level of lawbreaking they would have been fine to keep on keeping on??).

Will this be the ‘high watermark’ of insanity required to get some resources and commitment allocated to halt the slide into anarchy there? Or is an even higher level required before that will happen? If so, it boggles the mind to think what would be next! Right now from the reports, we’re up to: ‘People running around at 4am on a Thursday morning screaming and waving machetes and baseball bats – and randomly murdering passers by’. Probably time to act on that, really…..

My condolonces go out to this young man’s family.

The teen is being charged with murder AND aggravated robbery. So I do believe that was the initial motive behind the assault and murder. It appears that it was a mugging that went wrong. I thought it may have been a robbery as it appears the police couldn’t initially identify the victim describing him as being between 20-40 of Asian appearance so the guys wallet may have been taken hindering immediate identification.

Hopefully maybe more can now be done to deal with the dangerous users of the drug ice who unfortunately are becoming more and more common amongst the Government housing unit complexes. People on Ice are very dangerous to themselves and to others and are cannot be reasoned with. I have seen the effort of ice on Neighbours when I lived at Northbourne and it is a truly nasty evil drug far more destructive in my opinion to society then the other drugs combined with the exception of alcohol, cigarettes and refined sugar.

I got a Housing Transfer out of Northbourne Flats because my mental health was not good. I hope that the decent tenants that want to move away can now get the priority transfer that they deserve more quickly after this sorry episode.

Why would you ask your self this? Has Ice been mentioned by the police? Do you know something about the flat raided or is it just a location thing? I’m not saying your wrong, I just want to know where that thought came from.

From the article, but I guess you’re right, that may well be wrong judgement on behalf of the residents that saw the men. Despite my expressed concerns though, I’m very pleased the police located the culprits as quick as they did. When that happened, I thought that wasn’t possible due what appeared to be a purely opportunistic crime with no motive that could have linked killer(s) and victim.

I wait with anticipation for the courts to once again give not much more than a slap on the wrist to the juvie(s) for this crime – I am sure the perpetrators have a good sob story as to why they were driven to such depths.

Looks like the cops knew what they were doing – good work. Hopefully this scum gets put away for a looooooong time.

Very sad.

Good stuff.

A 17 year old?! What the hell is going on around here?! If he did do it, I hope he is tried as an adult.

Mmmm, the cities north eh? Tha leaves a wide area as to where this offender is from.
