Arthouse videos and Italian sausages

I know Canberrans like to talk about their general level of education, culture etc… so is there a video library anywhere in the ACT that offers arthouse, classic cinema and foreign language fare, not just your standard Blockbuster dross?

And as a long term visitor to Canberra but only a recent visitor, where are all the decent butchers shops here? The Fyshwick markets have good fruit and OK seafood, but don’t inspire this meat eater. Does anyone do good Italian pork sausages or will I be driving up to Sydney for supplies.

Best italian sausage i’ve tasted for a while was at Fyshwick markets on the weekend at the game/chicken shop. Good crisp bite, coarse particle composition and excellent balance of black pepper, fennel and red wine flavours. Sorry for the wanky descriptions but just returned from a meat technology seminar!
Alan @ Southland’s Italian is good too but a bit too peppery for my liking.
Bottom line with butchers is unless you want something to casserole/stew, then you get what you pay for.

Yeah, went to the Griffith Butchery to order an organic fresh bird for Xmas dinner… was there 2 weeks before xmas, and they wouldn’t take an order! Tried to convince me that the frozen birds in the freezer were just as good.

We got a nice fresh one from the mob at Fyshwick markets, who have free-range stuff.

Quickflix, heck I should have remembered that, I get a couple of DVDs in my letterbox every week from them! Huge range. I got all of the Blakes 7 series from them, about to watch I Claudius. And they have tons of movies, lots of old ones too.

They even have “arthouse” in their genre listings.

The Post Office/Video Hire place at Hughes shops has a pretty good selection of arthouse stuff for rental.

Hi all, first post on the Act. I’ve recently moved across from interstate and as I don’t have wheels, I’ve found Quickflix to be great. Huge selection of old and overseas stuff I couldn’t find in the local Civic, and I don’t have to worry about due dates and the like. Might not work for everyone, but I’m sold.

@I-filed – Has the Griffith butcher gone back to selling organic meat? I was there a few months ago and they had given up on it; they even had a brochure explaining why, and how they were sourcing their meat now. I haven’t gone back, because frankly they were still using the organic meat prices, and I’ve never found the service there very good, but if they have been persuaded to return to selling organically produced meat then I’ll give them another go.

Another vote for Mr Zivko. Even my children plead for his black puddings.

I’m going to second the vote for the Hawker butchers. Really outstanding sausages IMO

Kambah shops – home of the “Sausage King”.

Err Hawker butchery – home of the “Bonza Banger”

I second the butcher in Lyneham shops – the pork sausages from there actually taste like pork, as opposed to generic meat flavour.

Allan, the Butcher at Southlands at Mawson is without doubt the best Butcher in Canberra. He has the most amazing variety, his window display cannot be outdone and he will prepare things on request with a great big smile on his face. I have a huge brood and we go through a lot of meat.

He has pork sausages that are hard to beat, made to a traditional french recipe with lots of garlic.

My second choice is the Red Hill Butcher, if you are willing to brave the ferals that hang around Red Hill shops it is also worth a look.

Electric Shadows Bookshop is definitely the place to go for renting. You should also check out the ANU Film Group – works on a membership basis (open to anyone), screens a mix of recent releases and classics (both spanning a wide set of genres) from proper 35mm film on a big cinema screen. In fact if you print and use this voucher before May 22nd you can get $10 off an annual membership.

Many Rioters apparently probably wouldn’t be seen dead at Tuggers but allow me to put in a plug for Civic at Tuggeranong Square. A (relatively) large range of classic, foreign and some ‘arthouse’ stuff.

Griffith Shops has a good butcher – organic too.

Electric Shadows bookshop is still going? awesome! Their video rental library had all the good stuff.

There’s a funny little continental butcher/smallgoods deli in Riverside Plaza, Qbn (opposite Coles) that has a very nice range of Italian sausages, the sign says home-made.

The butchers at Lyneham shops is outstanding. Their sausages have won heaps of awards, Supabarn stocks their sausages.

Video Ezy in Belconnen has an excellent selection.

Also, if you’re lucky enough to be at the ANU or know anyone at the ANU, there are videos and DVDs you can borrow from the libraries (Asian stuff at Menzies, everything else at Chifley) that you won’t find anywhere else.

I thought it was customary to eat popcorn while watching movies?

Or is it different with arthouse?

For smallgoods you can’t go past Mr Zivco’s stall at the farmers markets. He sells out of a refrigerated trailer. I think he makes it all himself and there’s a fair range of sausage like stuff and things I can’t ID. His plain old smoked ham is good. His prices are fine. But you have to go to the markets at EPIC on Sat between 8am-11am, it’s the only time they’re open.

DITO electric shadows. It’s the only video library I reckon.

The butcher at Sutton is the best around, but its a bit of a hike.

Electric Shadows Bookshop in Braddon should do the trick, they have a rental library there

The ACT public library has a not-too-shabby range of the flicks you seem to be after. Look ’em up online and choose your local library as the delivery point. You might even find some movies that have Italian sausages in them.

Don’t know about the South Side, but the Video Easy in Kingston (I think – *not* the one near the Commonwealth Bank) seems to have a descent collection of foreign, classic and arthouse films, particularly a reasonable collection of Asian DVDs.

The Griffith Butcher is the best butcher shop I’ve been to in Canberra. They cut up all of their own meat, and are often able to get more unusual stuff to order. They used to have organic meat, but I think it’s non-organic these days, but still very good.

Don’t know about Italian sausages. I expect the Deli Planet in the Fyshwick Markets has okay Italian sausage, but not being an expert, I’m not sure I can contradict your initial opinion.
