Arts loot pays the salaries?

The Chief Minister has announced new recipients of Government arts funding largesse.

Australian National Capital Artists, the Canberra International Film Festival, M16 Inc, and Pro Musica are all getting amounts that look an awful lot like living wages for their operators.

The CM explains it thusly:

“Program Funding is a new category introduced this year for not-for-profit arts organisations that deliver high-quality programs of activity and that have a clearly defined role in the ACT’s arts sector,” Chief Minister and Minister for the Arts Jon Stanhope said today.

“The organisations funded under this category have demonstrated their important contribution to the artistic life of the ACT.”

That is most likely what it will go to. The fine print of most ArtsACT funding documentation has a preoccupation with salaries. It will mean that Canberra will only get what it is already getting, but at least it improves the likelihood of these organisations surviving.

And still no public consultation; didn’t he say he had learnt his lesson in his defeat/victory speech on election night?
