Asbestos defined!

Katy Gallagher has the happy news that she’s introduced changes to the Dangerous Substances Amendment Bill 2010 so that asbestos-like things which are not asbestos can be safely brought into the ACT. The items include:

    — Talcum powder- can contain non asbestos form of tremolite
    — Nephrite Jade- non asbestos form of tremolite or actinolite
    — Vermiculite- which is often added to gardening soil

Nice to know we’re sorting it out.

Fairly sure vermiculite has been the weapon of choice for fire protection of buildings in the ACT for about the last 20 years or so.

It’s been available from garden centres/hardware stores, used to aerate soil or for hydroponics.

Pretty sure I have a bag in the shed.

I feel much safer now!

There would be many, many building owners open to prosecution if this stuff has been illegal up until now.

At least mums can now dust their babies’ bottoms with talcum powder without breaking the law. What a relief. Thank you Katy.

Hmm back in my day it wasn’t recommended. We used to use corn powder.

Is talcum safe now?

Plenty of asbestos dust around anyway… Just take a trip out to the new suburbs in Molonglo….

Sure wouldn’t like my kids running around there…

They should rename it to the new “Brookland Greens Estate”…
