Asian eyes on Canberra

The tourism publicity push seems to be coming along nicely with two articles appearing over the weekend.

The Jakarta Post has been marvelling at the architectural wonders of Canberra. Even if they have found some of our history confusing: “the newly opened National Portrait Gallery showcases Australian personalities that have shaped the country, from its founding father James Cook to songbird Kylie Minogue.

But the Indonesian perspective on Parliament House is particularly touching:

The sweeping green lawns leading up to the entrance of the House send a welcoming message. A visitor without an appointment could visit the premises with less difficulty than entering a shopping mall in Jakarta. The Parliament’s marble and timber reflect the strong, powerful land elements. Columns that support the high ceiling in the foyer endorse a brawny sense of Australia as one of the world’s oldest democracies.

AsiaOne Travel on the other hand has been particularly smitten by Floriade and the purple prose is flying:

In Canberra, your spirit will be refreshed – the nature lover within you will revel in Floriade and your worries will diminish in a hot air balloon flight. Discover romance in a vineyard, have an adventure in the white snowfields at the Snowy Mountains and indulge in good food, wine and company at the Fireside Festival.

By the end of your trip, you’ll be rejuvenated.

As long as they had a good time I suppose.

The Jakarta Post article was a good read. It’s interesting to hear what the neighbours think.

An adjective that struck me was “Australia’s fenceless Parliament House”. I never really thought about it in that way before.

But the best line has to be “The Queen’s Terrace Caf* may be used for apolitical blind dates.” What the?

“A brawny sense of Australia”? Did they mistakenly visit a gym instead of Parliament House?

sheesh, they got it all wrong again! s’all boring crap, canberra…

Like “Canberra – great place to live, but sh*thouse place to visit”?

And “Sydney – great place to visit, sh*thouse place to live”.

sheesh, they got it all wrong again! s’all boring crap, canberra… isn’t it?

fab to see a positive spin for once – just our luck, they’ll start to all flock here and we’ll also innovate some new pandemic or something.
