Thanks for your help once more guys.

Vina’s near Aldi in Gungahlin has just about everything you need for Asian cooking and the owners are lovely people.

Bumpy.

Just found a yummy looking soup to make for dinner so I’ll need some galangal and fresh herbs. My nearest Asian grocer is Fyshwick which seems to specialise in packaged food. Any ideas where I can find fresh veggies?

I also crave taro at this time of year. Do I need to go to Dickson?

Cheers, went to the little Asian grocers at the back of Aldi, Gungahlin.
$20 for a 14″, just about to smoke the house out now.

Can anybody recommend a place to get a decent carbon steel wok from in Canberra? Fairly lightweight, round-bottomed, but sturdy?
None of your Jamie Oliver non-stick junk, just a proper wok to season and then abuse at high temps?
The “aussie” online ones I’ve found come from China via the UK for gods sake…there must be somewhere local but I haven’t found it yet.
TIA.

Lucky Price, Erindale. Cheap as chips and excellent quality.

Have carbon steel woks gone up in price because they have carbon in them?

IIRC the big one in Dickson has a decent range of woks right up to the ones you bathe the dog in

FYI, there is a new Asian Grocer over at the UNILoge, Childers St called Daily Market.

They seem to have a large variety of products with easy parking.

FYI. A new online Asian Grocer has just opened and they deliver to all parts of Canberra.

Depending on which Asian grocer you go to, the fresh stuff usually comes in to the store twice a week, for most of them it is Tuesday and Friday night…

I’ve found that the Vietnamese shop at Homeworld Tuggeranong (near the Sportsman’s Warehouse) has by far the best range of Asian food. They have some great seafood in the freezer and a good range of noodles.

+1

Great fresh stuff too, and they seem to turnover their groceries fairly quickly.

Though the best collection of random japanese icecreams has to be in the grocer next to where JB HiFi/Impact was in Civic. I recommend the fish shaped vanilla one.

I can’t remember if there was fresh fruits, but there is an asian grocer down the street from McDonalds Dickson – on the other side of the road. It’s a small shop packed with sealed dried fruits, and other asian packaged foods. Last time we were there we bought out their entire stock of Mee-goreng (students!).

Saigon Asian Groceries on Cape Street, Dickson

I have always known how to spell Angkor Wat, I just misspelled the misspelled name of the store that the owner cannot seem to get right.

I too feel the same way as you chaton about the Cambodian culture and people.

I think you’ll find it’s *actually* called Angkor Wat – after the temple in Cambodia.

No chaton, it’s actually been given the naff name “Angkor What”, not Angkor Wat. I’ve been to the temples and know how to spell them correctly, sadly unlike the owners of this over priced shop in Belconnen.

I do have to say though that their fresh food is super fresh, but all other groceries are supermarket prices. I think every other Asian supermarket sell their products at about half the price.

you still spelt it wrong first time round. 😛 for the record – I’m just playing, not trying to cause any “riots”.

i wonder if it’s expensive simply because of westfield’s atrocious rental prices, compared to the cheap rent up in the courts in Belco.

i’ve been to the temples too which could be why I’m a bit argumentative, I get upset when people pass by cambodian culture without a second thought.

Just thought I’d chip in. When grabbing dinner last night I saw the they’re opening a “Hub” next to Zeffirelli’s in Belconnen in the old Cash Converters building on the corner. What do they sell there?

Sadly the AngorWhat seemed to have closed down when I was last at Belconnen Mall…

It’s moved to where the optometrist used to be – between Woolies and Baker’s Delight.
Much larger shop, so more than one person can fit down an aisle at a time!
Their veggies are usually far better than either of the two large supermarkets in Westfield and they have a greater range of fresh produce as well.

If you’re after South Asian products though, Bharat International in Belconnen is the bomb!

No, it _actually is_ called “Angkor What” —

The little old chinese or vietnamese lady in the lawns at Manuka (she has set up her milk crates outside La Scala shoes)! She harassed me with her Bok Choy last weekend but little did she know I have troughs of them growing on my deck (and trying to go to seed).

Farmers Market at EPIC good for greens

Mings in Belconnen is great. Some people might suggest AngorWhat (yes, it’s actually called that), but I think the quality is “OK” and the prices ridiculous!

I was at Ankor in Belconnon mall today and I was so suprised at how fresh everything was. Made an amazing dinner if I do say so myself.

Southside Farmers market, Sunday morning for daikon. There’s some Japanese fresh produce growers who sell a range of pesticide free veges, good range of fresh root veges at good prices.

I like the Asian Grocer at the Belconnen Markets. Not so good for fresh veges but has all the spices, sauces and curry pastes that I use. They also serve nice food.

I don’t know Mings but will check it out.

Simply Fresh (I think thats the name – the big fruit shop) in the Canberra Centre has a good range of asian fruit & veg – quality generally good, prices ok. Includes things like durian, thai eggplant, taro, garlic greens.

If you want basics like asian greens and herbs, either of the little asian grocery shops in Dickson have boxes on the floor which are good value and fresh.

Have yet to find really good daikon though… maybe Australia just doesn’t have deep enough soil…

The Fyshwick Fresh Food Market sell some Asian vegetables, I’ve seen Bok Choy and Thai Eggplant for sale (the ones you put into Thai Green Curry) plus others I don’t know much about.

There’s one at Mawson shops next to the video shop, nearly opposite the Mawson club.
Good for fresh veges, herbs etc & all manner of asian ingredients, crap for service though.

^ There is one in Mawson

I find the HUB the best, they are also located in Gungahlin…

Woden is devoid of asian grocers as far as I can tell, but there are a couple of Indian spice shops in Phillip.

The Hub in Gungahlin is a great store. Veggies I think are best on Wednesday and Saturday when they seem to get their fresh food deliveries.

The hub, which is in the hyperdome/gunners works for me..
(ok, the only stuff i buy from there is the american lollies/soft drink, but yeah..)
