ASIO's big building

In the Canberra Times John Thistleton (the thinking man’s real estate groupie) is having a gush over plans for ASIO’s new headquarters on Constitution Avenue.

With five storeys of glass walls and sitting on a stepped podium, ASIO’s sleek new headquarters in the
Parliamentary Triangle nonetheless aims to have a low profile.

Landscaping will ensure the $527million edifice is barely seen above tree tops and will be screened from the culturally significant Parliament House vista, according to a heritage assessment report.

Come 2012 you’ll be able to go press your nose against the fence and have a look yourself.

It’s ironic, given the number of business that failed/were driven bankrupt through working on that building. Stuffup after stuffup. If it was so urgently needed, why haven’t they moved in?

Maybe they did, and you just don’t know it! 😉

Will it ever be fit for purpose?

Return of the Jedi. That is all…

It’s ironic, given the number of business that failed/were driven bankrupt through working on that building. Stuffup after stuffup. If it was so urgently needed, why haven’t they moved in?

Just digging up an old thread here, but I drove past a fortnight ago and noticed it is still unoccupied – wasn’t it officially opened by KRudd 6 months or so ago? It may also have been a trick of the light, but it looked like a glass panel had detached itself.

Will it ever be fit for purpose?

Considering a Skyfire paralytic drunk once managed to evade our glorious ASIO’s top-notch security and penetrate the compound under construction undetected for several hours, could it be that they are now having a good think about all the possible penetrations by well-equipped and motivated sober people with a relevant interest?

Mind you, with their recent admission in the International Court of Justice that they are happy to risk Australian lives and the reputation of our Aid missions by conducting commercial espionage for the purpose of helping Petroleum companies get one over our impoverished neighbours, has the time come to ask whether its budget and scope of operations should come under review with a view to giving ASIO a severe pruning?

The real cost is for more secret bunkers under the lake.

The Cone of Silence is not cheap you know.

More expensive than HQJOC? Wow.

I suppose it housing twice the staff, but there’s no access road to build, triple boundaries etc. The money must be in the gold taps and espresso bars.

The Parliamentary Triangle is bounded by Commonwealth, Kings and Constitution Avenues, so the pond is in the middle of it.

Er… isn’t the Parliamentary Triangle on the south side of the ornamental pond?
