Ask RiotACT: Best mulch to use in Canberra?

Hi Rioters.

I’m looking to put mulch throughout my garden. I did a quick search and there appears to be a lot of variety and a lot of price variations.

I’d love any recommendations you have on what type to use, where to buy, and the best time of year to apply it?

Whatever you decide to buy insist that if it is delivered with any rubbish in it you will send it back. The last truckload of forest litter I bought locally was liberally mixed with shredded plastic pipes, shoes, underwear and other household rubbish.
So much for the “independent quality control” they advertise.

You will get weed with sugar cane mulch too.

Don’t buy forest litter, it comes with forest weed seeds and you’ll forever have to weed them out, and not just the first season.
I personally have used sugar cane mulch on a few gardens, it keeps all weeds at bay and if you’re generous with how thick you put it down, it will eventually break down, sweeten the soil, and provide nutrients to all plants. It also acts as an insulator in winter and summer, keeping the soil temperature even and the soil moist.
Rain or a good watering will settle it into place so it doesn’t blow away. You will need to refresh it every so often, but a good idea is to dig the old mulch into the soil before you put a fresh layer on, this encourages worms and it aerates the soil, making watering more effective as the soil won’t become hydrophobic.
