Ask RiotACT: Last mile transport options

Hi all,

Looking into ‘last mile’ options for commuting from my house to the bus stop, and then from the bus stop to work (and in reverse) each day. All up, it’s about 2km per segment (8km per day) in order to keep the bus commute reasonable.

Obviously, a bike is a good option, but I’ve seen a number of people riding electric scooters, but I’m having trouble tracking down any information on the ACT Government website about power requirements/limitations. A pedelecs is limited to 250 watts and motor assistance to 25km/h, however, whether this applies to scooters that you don’t pedal is dubious.

I’m referring to scooters like this.

Just looking for options, as especially in the morning, the office is uphill from the office, so the bike could make the last mile a more sweaty exercise which I would be keen to avoid if possible (could take a change of clothes each day, but also could be a little impractical.

Any advice on what others do for their commutes, or any light on the legality of these scooters?

I used a Razor E300 in Canberra for many years. Many police saw me using it, and I also took it into Woden station and asked a couple of random foot patrols over the years I rode it and was always assured it was completely legal on footpaths (but I needed a helmet for the road – I wore one anyway though). Is a great scooter, I did 11km to work and back again 11km, 5 days a week for 3 years on it till I finally rode the engine into the ground, it’s a solid workhorse though. Can get replacement parts and professional servicing in Sydney, Razor has an authorised parts/service outlet there through an Aussie company that is their agent here.
