Ask RiotACT: Long-stay cattery recommendations

Ask RiotACT

I’m lucky enough to be going overseas for a six-week period later this year and need to find a reliable, secure and caring cat boarding facility for my three-year-old cat.

He is strictly an inside only cat (with zero road sense) but he has a remarkable aptitude for slipping out the front door if anyone unwary opens it, so I think having a house sitter come in and be responsible for him for that long isn’t a feasible or reasonable ask.

Since it is for a substantial block of time, I also want want to find a boarding facility where he has a chance to run around and play a bit, and isn’t cooped up in a tiny little ‘unit’ the whole time.

I’ve done a lot of Googling and reading of Facebook reviews etc, and have arranged to inspect a number of places. I just wanted to ask whether anyone in the RiotACT community has any recent experiences, recommendations or anti-recommendations, that they are willing to share.

Thanks for your time.

I understand your concerns about a house sitter, but there is a very good website called Trusted Housesitters and they have experienced cat lovers looking for longer stays. I use a cat-sitter daily service for short trips because I have three cats and they have a large cat-run. I know the same business can provide live-in housesitters – Canberra’s Friendly Petsitter and the website is very specific about what they do. I know someone who once left their cat at Tara, Beltana Road, Pialligo for a considerable time as she was caught up in a housing drama in Sydney. She and her cat were both very happy.

Just make sure your cats vaccinations are up to date and you have the paperwork to show that, it’s a requirement for pretty much all cattery’s (catteries?).

When we were last there, Reedy Creek near Braidwood had a shed in which the cats mingled together freely. They had room to wander around and were locked in carefully so there was no risk of them being run over. It’s a fair way to the highway from the property in any case. It may depend on whether the cat can cope with other cats. Ours were OK but didn’t look thrilled about it when we first arrived!
