Ask RiotACT

Hi all, I am looking for luxury/boutique, resort/getaway style accommodation for a 1 night weekend escape from Canberra. 1-2 hours from Canberra, and full-service, not self-catering. Happy to drive to a local town for dinner, but looking for breakfast on-site as well as entertainment options such as spa or pool.

Google searches have not been very lucrative! Suggestions appreciated.

Wife and I were happy with Heritage Guest House and Restaurant Bombala – worth a look at Trip Advisor.

It’s not away from Canberra, but have you considered Jamala at the the National Zoo and Aquarium?

That should more than match your luxury, resort, full-service and entertainment requests 🙂
It’s easy to overlook things in your home town.

I thought about buying this as a Christmas gift to my parents, but GOSH it is expensive. Particularly when most of the rooms don’t actually look on to animals like the publicity photographs imply.

I have been to Lake Crackenback Resort and Spa a few times. Not too far from Canberra, luxury feel with choice of restaurants and a Spa. Also has a range of activities available either for free or extra cost. They often have a range of specials depending on the time of year that include breakfast etc.

Bannisters at Mollymook is an option that quickly comes to mind.

And I would like to learn of other options too.

A spa is “entertainment”? Interesting! If you are happy to do without a spa as entertainment, there are farmstays in some gorgeous places – not sure whether Mona near Braidwood is still taking guests, or there are working farms outside Young that love having guests in the cottages.

I reckon places like Bowral, Berrima, Moss Vale, etc would be your best bet. Try Milton Park Country House Hotel and Spa. It looks as if it has what you’re looking for.

Good thread. Useful info. Can not wait to see the suggestions.

I know its closer than you 1-2 hours away, but the Carrington in Bungendore is ok. Nice little place to walk around and potter through shops too. So good eateries. There is also a B&B in Bungendore that I’m told is good. The stonehouse – or something similar.

Mittagong/Bowral area is great too – and Kangaroo Valley – but I don’t know any specific places to recommend there.

I’ve been to Sangoma Retreat in the Blue Mountains twice and it is pretty spectacular: https://inthetaratory.wordpress.com/2013/01/10/sangoma-retreat/

It’s a little further than 2 hours away, but worth it. Gourmet breakfasts and dinners (and light lunches but I doubt you’ll need it), all alcohol included, super-sized deep bath for two people, and just beautiful. Since I’ve been there the couple sold it to Spicers. One of the best things about it is that it’s only got about 4 or 5 villas – but I see they’re closing in February to expand… http://spicersretreats.com/spicers-sangoma-retreat/
