Ask RiotACT - Motor Home plumber recommendations.

I have a friend who would like some recommendations for a local Canberra or Queanbeyan plumber who does water and gas plumbing in motorhomes or campervans.

They brought an Atwood 32 litre hot water service and want it professionally plumbed. They know enough to do the water, and have asked for my help with that but they won’t touch the gas.

Probably a wise thing given gas’s ability to explode and suffocate. He has called a plumber before, but that plumber didn’t even know the difference between 4 eighths and 5 sixteenth pipe, which is a small but significant difference.

That plumber piss farted around for over two hours, cut the end off an existing gas supply pipe which would have been perfect for attaching a flexible hose to the stove then when my friend pointed that out to them, the plumber started to insult him saying my friend was an office worker and didn’t know what he was talking about.

At that point both me and my friend asked that plumber to leave. It was obvious that he really did not know what he was doing, and that he was damaging what was already in place.

So, we need a plumber in Canberra who can and has plumbed caravans, motor homes or campervans, is confident in plumbing gas appliances in those vehicles, can also do water pipe plumbing and has polite customer service.

Any recommendations?

Hi Homless,

I became somewhat of an expert with motor home and caravan gas conversions when I decided to take off around Australia for 12 months in a van myself. Me and my then girlfriend, now wife, kitted out an ex ambulance and with frequent visits to Lloyds I got to know the sales reps pretty well. They then started handing my cards out to everyone and I quickly started to get the hang of it all.

Most plumbers really don’t ever touch campervans or boats and there is a whole chapter of the rule book dedicated to this area.

The main problem I have seen in the field is people ordering campers from overseas and then trying to convert them in Australia. Australia has extremely high gas standards and requires 100% of the gas installation to be installed with Australian approved material’s and appliances. If you are ordering from overseas try and arrange for the appliances to be taken out and sold in their country of origin, and then allow for purchasing new appliances here.

Happy to take calls and give free advice on camper conversions or installations. If I’m not in the office, ask Joseph to get me to call you back.

I reckon Jayco in Queanbeyan would be able to recommend someone, or they may be able to look at it. I know they look after all types of caravans and motorhomes.

Try David Sullivan on 0414 507 357. I’m told he’s a wizz at all things motorhome.

Or talk to Tony at Ace Gas (QBN) on 6299 7477. He fits gas conversions to cars & taxis, and did the diesel gas conversion on my bus/motorhome. At least he knows LPG! He may be happy to take the job himself, or may at least know someone who is.
