Ask RiotACT

Hi all,

Does anyone know about the redevelopments up on Mt Mugga Mugga? I just went for a walk around the perimeter of the old quarry there, and encountered a new road, new fencing, new concrete structures – including what appear to be two new weigh-bridges.

Dear all – thank you for this intell and the new landfill operations are something of which I had been hitherto unaware. This has enabled me to put together the following feedback for the National Capital Authority: Dear sir/madam, I note that there is redevelopment occurring on the top of Mt Mugga Mugga. You should be aware that some old concrete steps are there that contain the imprints of four names and handprints – Laurie, Joe, Ian and George. They are known locally as the Mugga Mugga Beatles. They were quarrymen in the ?1940s and it would be a pity if these steps were to be removed or damaged during the redevelopments.

After we moved here in 1970 one of my teachers in primary school said that mining companies have to restore land after mining, and that after blasting was finished on Mt Mugga Mugga they would have to restore it to the way it was before mining, and that they would have to plant new trees. 46 years later we are still waiting…

Moral of the story don’t always believe teachers. Common sense says you cannot restore a quarry to its previously glory. I mean to say how are you going to fill the hole?

John’s teachers were a little confused.
The Mt Mugga Mugga hole was created by rock quarrying, not mineral extraction by open cut mining.
In the latter case, the pit hole that is created is usually refilled by the overburden that is stored on site until the mineral is exhausted. A bond is usually lodged with the state/territory government to cover the cost.
Who teaches these teachers?

no open cut quarry has ever been restored…nor ever will be . We have open cut Asbestos mines in Australia still sitting there un remediated after some 30 years or more.

Australian Politicians are more interested in making pitiful stick throwing laws and boosting their own incomes while diminishing ours.

PART 2 PUBLIC CONSULTATION REQUIREMENTS
The NCA’s ‘Commitment to Community Engagement (August 2011)’ details how the NCA
conducts consultation. The purpose is to achieve a greater level of consistency and
transparency in the NCA’s decision making process.

* the minimum requirements for consultation

Interesting looks like the Gov meet the minimum requirements.

What has the National Capital Authority have to do with a tip on Mugga Lane Hill ? whay are they sticking their noses in ? Getting a kick back from the Taxpayer ?

According to the NCA 200 written advices were sent to nearby residences in 2014 inviting comment.
“The NCA’s consultation process was carried out in accordance with the Plan and the NCA’s
‘Commitment to Community Engagement (August 2011)’.
Three written submissions were received in addition to ACT agency comments. The NCA is
satisfied that the major concerns of the community have been addressed”

It appears they used the same BS “community comment” tactics that the ACT Government used prior to the expansion of the Mugga Lane landfill.

How many new houses have been built in East O’Malley sice 2014 and were the now residents aware of this “development”?

Well thank you Dungers for the info. I did wonder what was going on there.

The good people of O’Malley will be thrilled with the “disposal of clean fill and Beneficial Reuse Material (BRU) “.

Hopefully an expansion of the landfill down the road?
This being the case the mega-rich in East O’Malley can savour the fragrance of slow-rotting disposable nappies and formaldehyde too.

Well, I was half-right, but nothing except soil and building materials (with a dash of asbestos and cocktail of insecticides and heavy metal) are to be dumped there.

Another ACT No Waste initiative.
It is estimated that it will take 20 -30 years to fill the hole.
This one has really snuck under the radar.
Good luck ye residents on East O’Malley.
