Ask RiotACT: Noisy neighbour air conditioning

Ask RiotACT

Hi Rioters,

I have just moved into a house and discovered the neighbour has a double stack air-conditioner pointing at the living room with the air con on all day and most of the night. I don’t know the decibels, but it bothers me that I can hear it with the windows shut. I’d rather work out a peaceful solution with them, even to the point of paying for something to block the sound (within reason) around the unit or on the fence.

I’d appreciate any experience or advice on this.

Shame there are not regulations that restrict where air-conditioning can be placed, to keep them away from neighbours’ windows and doors.

Shame people think they need air-conditioning. I have lived in Canberra for over forty years and never found the need for it. I am mind boggled what your neighbour’s electricity bill must be.

Thanks Maya123. Obviously the cost isn’t a factor in this case – the bills must be very high.

There is any number of people living in the community who need o be able to tightly control the temperature in their abodes due to chronic medical conditions or disability. A couple that come to mind are quadriplegia and multiple sclerosis. Your views on this are insensitive and ill considered.

Suggest you instal double glazing.

Double glazing only works when the window is closed. They should have a right to fresh air without the noisy. (Although how fresh that air would be with an air-conditioner outside.)

Hi – thanks for your suggestion Chrisin but I agree with Maya, I would like to be able to open the windows and enjoy fresh air.
